Courtesy University Archives Former Kansas football coach Dom Fambrough was carried off the field by his players after a victory. Fambrough coached the Jayhawks from 1971 to 1974 and from 1979 to 1982. Fambrough was serving as the chairman of the selection committee for the hiring of a new football coach when he gave then-athletics director Bob Marcum a list of potential candidates. Marcum tore the list up and delivered his decision to Fambrough. "He said I've visited with the chancellor and we decided we wanted to bring you back as coach," Fambrough said. "I said to Bob Marcum, 'Have you lost your mind totally?' Marcum had not lost his mind, and Fambrough had not lost the magic touch. He guided the Jayhawks to the 1981 Hall of Fame Bowl and garnered the Associated Press Big Eight Coach of the Year Award. Fambough went on to coach his final season in 1982. By the end of his career, Fambrough had participated as a player or coach in five of the eight bowl games in Kansas football history. Fambrough has kept football a part of his life by attending all of the Jayhawk football prac tices as a special allowance by coach Mark Mangino. Fambrough said he agreed with Mangino's philosophy of football, but Fambrough would never offer advice or do any coaching from the sideline of the practice fields. What Fambrough does is remind the players of his hatred for those who don the black and gold of Missouri. During his years as a coach, Fambrough always tried to instill a mentality in his players that the Missouri game was more than a rivalry. "They talk about this being the oldest rivalry west of the Mississippi," Fambrough said. "It's not a rivalry, it's war. It's total war. I always told my players you take no prisoners in this game." In one particular speech to his troops, Fambrough went so far as to tell his players that William Quantrill had ties to the University of Missouri during his massacre of Lawrence in 1863, a story he invented. "They came over here during the Civil War and some guy named Quantrill came over and killed all the men, raped all the women and burned the damn town down," Fambrough said. "Then, I don't why, but I said then years later we found out he was a Missouri alum." The speech came back to haunt Fambrough when one of his players happened to have a test over the Civil War in history class and wrote that Quantrill was a Missouri graduate as an answer. "Thank goodness I was a good friend of the professor," Fambrough said. "He said 'I'm going to let you coach football, and you leave teaching history to me.'" Fambrough is not a history teacher, but he does get emotional when he thinks of Missouri. "It makes me angry." Fambrough said. "Even at 80 years of age I want to put on the shoulder pads. I just want to hit somebody."
