But that's why Redford chose to come forward. "This sort of violence is just like anything else, silence only perpetuates the problem," Redford said. Drawing her courage from Dennis Dailey's "Human Sexuality in Everyday Life" class and a book, Cunt: A Declaration of Independence by Inga Muscio, Redford said she refused to be a statistic. "I don't think this is important because it's unique — I think it's important because it's so not unique," she said. She's not alone In 2002 Lawrence Police reported 33 rapes,46 forcible fondlings,252 aggravated assaults and 926 simple assaults. While this year's numbers are only updated through March, so far reports show 10 rapes, seven forcible fondlings, 42 aggravated assaults and 182 simple assaults, said Sgt. Mike Pattrick. He said he believed this year's totals would be similar. "I can't substantiate claims that there has been an increase in sexual assaults." Patrick said. Police told Redford there had been increased crime in the area, she said. But the department has added emphasis on canvassing the area KU Public Safety is also taking steps to make residents in the area more aware of the incident by issuing a bulletin to GSP-Corbin and scholarship halls, said Lt. Schuyler Bailey. where Redford was attacked because of an increase in aggravated burglaries, Patrick said. "Not all of those have been sexual in nature." Patrick said. These measures don't help Redford. Redford said she and her friends were concerned because, while the crime happened in a highly populated area, no one called the police or offered help. The police talked to residents in the area, and one, she said, heard it. "He was able to say exactly what time it happened and he heard my screams," she said. "He said he looked out the window and saw a girl lying on the ground. My thought is, 'what, then he just went back to bed?' He didn't do anything. He didn't turn on a light. He didn't call the police. And he certainly didn't come out of the house." She said the response she's gotten from most people was: "You shouldn't have been walking alone." The attacker came out from behind her. He left suddenly. He could have followed her home, she said. She ran to her home and called her friends. Shook up, she waited until the morning to call the police. "On one hand, yeah that's true, but on the other hand, that what's 'Womyn Take Back the Night' is all about," she said. "We should not be afraid to walk alone." She's angry "I want this asshole caught," Redford said. The attacker was about 5'9" or 5'10," stalky with an olive complexion, either a bald head or really short hair, nicely dressed and may now have a black eye, Redford recalls. His face is an ever-present image in her mind. She jumps at any noise. She hasn't been at home in a week. Since the attack she's been staying with friends, but she wants to go home. She just can't yet. "I don't want to change my life," she said. "I'd feel like he had won." She won't be silenced "I had a real academic sense of sexual assault, but I hadn't had any experience with it," she said. Now that she has learned the hard way, Redford fears that others will learn that way too. Many people don't realize that sexual assault is everyone's problem, she said. Redford wants to tell her story. Women don't hear about the violence in Lawrence, she said. Redford isn't sure that her assault will have as big of an impact on her male friends. "Do you think any of my guy friends will think two about HELP NUMBERS Lawrence Police Department, 832-7850 Headquarters, 841-2345 (24 hour support line) hout supportfim Emily Tudor Women's Emily Taylor Women's Resource Center, 864-3552 Women's Transitional Care Services, 843-3333 Counseling and Psychological Services, 864-2277 walking alone?" Redford said. And she worries that the University of Kansas doesn't do enough to educate people of the crime on and near campus. For names, photos and addresses of Kansas' sex offenders. www.accesskansas.org /apps/kbiro_search.html?by=zip "I remember at my orientation, four years ago, there was a cop," she said. "I remember him saying something like there hadn't been any reported rapes in something like 10 years. That's ridiculous." Watkins Memorial Health Care Center 864-9500 Redford said she wanted people to realize they were vulnerable. Sexual assault exists, she said; it happened to her. "I want people to know that I am real," she said. "I am a woman, I am a person." — Edited by Katie Nelson Red Lyon Tavern 944 Mass. 832-8228 KARAOKE IS BACK!
