Section B · Page 4 The University Daily Kansan Tuesday, October 21. 1997 Big 12 football coaches tackle issues in press conference The Associated Press Selected comments from Big 12 Conference coaches at yesterday's weekly conference call: Kansas (4-3, 2-2 Big 12 Conference) Terry Allen is trying to adopt Texas Tech coach Spike Dykes' philosophy about playing No. 1 ranked Nebraska — have fun. Next game vs. Nebraska on Saturday "I don't know if I'm as gifted as Spike, but some of his quotes from last week about having fun were notable." Allen said. "You have to go into a game like that and try to use it as something to build on, and do things that make it somewhat fun, realizing it is a difficult task." Playing the Cornhuskers at home won't make the job any easier. "You're impressed with their personnel across the board at all positions," Allen said. "We fully expected them to be No. 1 after the close game that Penn State played last week. "I told our football team that there are 12 to 13 teams that get a chance to play the No. 1 team in the country and 6 to 7 that get to play them at home, so it's an opportunity to try to have some fun with it." Kansas State (5-1,2-1) Next game at Oklahoma on Saturday Coach Bill Snyder has chosen to let quarterback Michael Bishop's playing do his talking for him. He doesn't allow his talented signal caller to talk to the media after games. “He’s a young guy that has just got into the program and because he’s done well, he’s been blitzed by the media,” Snyder said. “That’s not the media’s fault, but he just needed some time. "I wanted everyone to understand it is a team game, and Michael is a fine player, but we have a lot of fine players, not necessarily great, great players. It was a matter of passing on the concept that we are a team-oriented program." Missouri (4-3.2-2) Next game at Oklahoma State on Saturday Coach Larry Smith won't allow his team much time to admire their big victory against Texas — not with unbeaten Oklahoma State on the horizon. "It's a victory that was much needed at a time when we were coming off our worst performance against Kansas State," Smith said. "We rebounded with a hard-fought, inspired victory, and we need to feed off of that and take the step to the next level because that's where we are going this week against Oklahoma State. Iowa State (0-6, 0-3) Iowa State and Baylor could get into a shootout with offenses better than their defenses. Iowa State (0-4, 0-3) Next game vs. Baylor on Saturday "Both teams are capable of moving the ball, and both defenses have been struggling," Iowa State coach Dan McCarney said. "It could be (a shootout). But a lot of times when you expect those things, it ends up going the other direction." McCarney knows the Bears can move the football. "They've got a tremendous corps of running backs. Jerod Douglas is outstanding," McCarney said. "We saw him last year and he kind of had his way with us. They have the biggest offensive line we've played, and we've played three ranked teams." Next game at Texas on Saturday Coach Rick Neuheisel sympathized with Penn State coach Joe Paterno, whose team beat Minnesota 16-15 but lost its No. 1 rank to Nebraska. "I have nothing but the highest regard for coach Paterno, not only his record but his character," Neuheisel said. "He's a class act. If he were playing the poll game, he could have tried to score at the end of the game instead of taking a knee. "I think the polls are ridiculous. They don't weigh the strength of schedule. I'd like to see them take the partiality out of it and hopefully, eventually we can have a playoff system." Coach Tom Osborne said he was not surprised by the Cornhuskers' No. I rank in the polls. Next game at Kansas on Saturday "I guess I'm not surprised either way," Osborne said. "I understand it's the nature of the game. As far as what it means to us, if we play well the rest of the way, we have control over our destiny. It's nice not to have to hope that somebody else loses. "With that ranking goes more scrutiny. I'm sure more people will pay attention to our game with Kansas and see if we played well and deserve to be No." "It was a great win for our players," Blake said. "It was close, but we'll take it and get on with the corrections. It's fun to correct after you win a game. We've got to get ready for Kansas State; they are big and playing well right now, so we've got to get to work." The Sooners edged the Baylor Bears, putting coach John Blake in a good mood for Saturday's game against Kansas State. 1” Oklahoma (3-4,1-2) Getting ready for Kansas State means getting ready for quarterback Michael Bishon. "With his runnin6 ability and also his throwing ability too, he's outstanding." Blake said. "He's making their offense go right now. They are blessed to have him." Oklahoma State (6-0, 3-0) Next game vs. Missouri on Saturday Coach Bob Simmons is impressed with Missouri quarterback Corby Jones' contributions to the Missouri offense. "Corby brings a lot to the table," Simmons said. "He's very similar to our guy (Tony Lindsay). He's very athletic and strong. His physical when he runs the ball, and he had an excellent day throwing the ball last week. He's a guy who makes you miss." "Reflecting on our game last year, he was the difference. He's a play maker and one our defense will really have to account for." Texas Tech (3-3, 2-1) Next game vs. Texas A&M on Saturday The Red Raiders and Texas A&M are both coming off losses, but Tech coach Spike Dykes said he was not sure how either team would be affected. "Coach (R.C.) Slocum does a good job getting his team ready to play each week," Dykes said. "We've coached against each other a long time, and I don't know if it will help or hurt them. I'm not sure getting beat 29-0 (to Nebraska) helped us, but I'm not sure it hurts us. "It's the same old hat that you'd better be ready to play every single solitary Saturday. They may beat you even if you play good." Coach Dave Roberts said he was happy with Baylor's game against the Oklahoma Sooners except for Next game at Iowa State on Saturday the final play of the game when Jeff Watson's pass was intercepted on a two-point conversion pass in the Sooner end zone, clinching a 24-23 Sooner victory. "Other than not making a two-point play, if you got a chance to see it, it was a heck of a football game," Roberts said. "They had opportunities, and we had opportunities, and in the end, they made a nice play." Texas (3-3, 1-2) The Bears aren't taking the witness Cycles rightly. "I'm concerned with us playing anybody right now," Roberts said. "We are undersized and young. Anybody we play, we'll have concerns. We are probably pretty similar football teams right now on tape. "We just have to be concerned about getting better. It's the same approach whether we're playing Oklahoma or Nebraska." Next game vs. Colorado on Saturday Texas kicker Phil Dawson played with a sore hamstring and had the worst day of his career, missing two field goal attempts and an extra point and had another extra point blocked by the Missouri Tigers on Saturday. Yesterday he went to the doctor. "We don't know if there is an injury or a strain or whatever," oach John Mackovic said. "He had some bothersome days last week and that had some impact on Saturday. He feels he will return and do fine. That's what he told me last night, and I hope it will be that way." Dawson said he was unhappy with the playing surface but didn't use it as an excuse. "My leg held up fine, but I never said I was Superman," Dawson said. "Everybody has a bad day. I guess it was my turn." Texas A&M (5-1, 2-1) Next game at Texas Tech on Saturday Coach R.C. Slocum didn't want to take any credit from Kansas State's defense for holding the Aggies to minus-35 yards rushing. But he did point out that there were extenuation circumstances. Starting tackle Cameron Spikes missed the game following eye surgery, leading rusher Dante Hall suffered a bruised knee on the first play of the game and the other tackle, Chris Ruhman, suffered a sprained knee and is questionable for Saturday's game. "The defense could have played well enough to keep us in the game, but we didn't do anything on offense." Slocum said. "We lost our tailback and both tackles. That had to have something to do with it."
