At "Late Night With Roy Williams," the Kansas Red team defeated the Kansas Blue 54-43 in a game plagued by turnovers and missed shots. Kansas men's basketball coach Roy Williams said his players had not been sharp during the scrimmage. "Some of the dunks during pregame were impressive, but the scrimmage wasn't the prettiest basketball," Williams said. "But then I'm not very concerned about that. I just wanted the fans and the kids to have fun." The Red team was led by junior guard Ryan Robertson, who had nine points, nine assists and five rebounds. He recorded just one turnover. Top scorers for the Red squad were junior forward Paul Pierce (12), junior forward T.J. Pugh (11) and freshman guard Kenny Gregory (10). The Blue team was led by senior forward Reaf LaFrentz, who had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Other top performers for the Blue squad included senior guard Billy Thomas, who had 12 points, and sophomore forward Lester Earl, who had nine points. Before the scrimmage began, the team had an informal slam-dunk exhibition during warm-ups. Fan favorites included Earl, Gregory and senior guard C.B. McGrath. "Every once in a while, when I'm feeling good, I can get it down," McGrath said. "I definitely felt like getting started with practices this season. Last season ended, then we had summer stuff and then preseason, so you kind of got tired of that and start to look forward to the next season." As for Gregory, he has struggled with back spasms for the past year. He left the scrimmage with about five minutes left to ice his back in the locker room during the final minutes. "I came to find out during the summer recruiting period his back had been hurting him," Williams said. "We made the decision to recruit him anyway, but I could have easily seen us not recruit him because I didn't think he was very athletic. Then I saw him in January, and this guy was flying around." Four high school recruits attended "Late Night" as part of their official visits to Kansas — forwards JaRon Rush (Kansas City, Mo.) and Quentin Richardson (Chicago), center Joel Pryzbella (Monticello, Minn.) and guard Jeff Boschee (Valley City, N.D.). Boschee made an oral commitment to sign with Kansas on Nov. 12. Students carried white banners with the recruits' name and number in blue with red trim around the field house before "Late Night" festivities began.
