KIRKSVILLE, Mo. — On Saturday, the Kansas men's collegiate rugby team lost its match to archrival, Truman State in Kirksville, Mo., 22-15. Truman State is ranked No. 6 in Division I.
Kansas started strong and led 10-8 going into the second half. But Kansas was forced to play the entire second half two men short after All-American Dan Karl and rookie South African Eric Van der Werwe were ejected.

"We were a better team. It just shows that emotions can take us down," team captain Karl Bhatnagar said. "We were playing with them. We just got into penalty trouble. It wasn't anything we could control."
Karl said that the referee, who holds the lowest rating given by the Rugby Union, was on a first-name basis with the Truman players.
Wing Ryan Crosby and flanker Van der Werwe both scored trys for the Jayhawks, and fullback Matt Schwartz connected on a penalty and an extra point. Each finished with five points.
This year's team, thought to be Kansas' best in more than 5 years, dropped to 7-2. But it could avenge this loss at Saturday's Heart of America tournament at Swope Park in Kansas City if both Kansas and Truman State reach the championship game, as expected.
Truman State fly half Dan Grady led all scorers with 15 points. The Kansas B side also lost its match 12-8.

Major league baseball released its schedule for the first round of playoffs yesterday, and only one NL game is to be telecast on a broadcast network — Game 3 between Florida and San Francisco at 7 p.m. CDT Friday on NBC.
NEW YORK National League fans should make sure their cable hookups are working.

The American League will be off that night, forcing NBC to choose a National League game. The other NL first-round games will be shown on ESPN, either in the afternoon or at 11 p.m.
Fox and NBC choose which games they want to telecast and sided with the American League, the New York market and the Juniors—Ken Griffey and Cal Ripken.

All five Yankees-Indians games will be broadcast on networks in prime time, starting with the opener at 8 tonight on Fox. Game 2 is scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday on Fox; Game 3, 7:30 p.m. Saturday on NBC; Game 4, 7:30 p.m. Sunday on Fox; and Game 5 at 8 p.m. Monday on Fox.
Game 1 of the Orioles-Mariners series will be aired at 8 p.m. tomorrow on NBC, and Game 3 will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday on Fox. The other three games will be shown at 4 p.m. on ESPN on Thursday, Sunday and Monday.
The Atlanta Braves, who are in the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season, will have their entire series with the Houston Astros shown on ESPN, beginning at 1 p.m. today.
"Atlanta is always a compelling story because they are always the favorite," said ESPN announcer Jon Miller, who will be broadcasting the series. "The teams played
close games all season, so I could see the Astros pulling off an upset. They don't match up over 162 games, but in a short series they could."
All ESPN games will be simulcast with over-the-air broadcasts in each club's home market.
If either AL series ends in three games, the schedule for Sunday's games could change. Also, if the Baltimore-Seattle series goes five games, and the Cleveland-New York series has ended, Fox will broadcast the Orioles-Mariners Game 5 at 8 p.m. Monday.
The second round will be network broadcasts, with NBC taking the National League and Fox the American League. NBC will telecast the entire World Series beginning at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 18.
IOWA CITY, Iowa — Ed Podolak,
a running back for the Kansas City
Chiefs during the 1970s, was
charged with public intoxication
and resisting arrest over the week-
end.
Podolak, now the color commentator on Iowa football broadcasts, was found sleeping on the Iowa campus about 2 a.m. Sunday, said Ann Rhodes, vice president for university relations.

That would have been about 11 hours after Podolak was on the air during Iowa's 38-10 win against Illinois at Knicknick Stadium. He starred for Iowa in the late 1960s.
By midafternoon Sunday, Podolak was at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, being introduced with other Chiefs' alumni during halftime of the Chiefs' game against the Seattle Seahawks.
Roger Gardner, vice president and general manager of the sports division for Learfield, said Podolak would continue to work Iowa games.
Public intoxication is a simple misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail or a $100 fine. Resisting arrest is a serious misdemeanor with a maximum punishment of up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
BLAZERS NBA player scores big with largest deal ever
PORTLAND, Ore. — Rasheed Wallace has agreed to a six-year contract with the Portland Trail Blazers worth about $75 million to $80 million. The deal is the biggest ever made by the team, a newspaper and a radio station reported yesterday.
The contract extension beats a Wednesday deadline that could have allowed the 6-foot-10 Wallace to become a free agent next summer.
Wallace is entering the final year of the three-year deal he signed after Washington made him its fourth selection in the 1995 NBA draft. He will make $2.33 million during the 1997-98 season.
His new contract, which will average about $13 million per season, will begin with the 1998-99 season and extend through the year 2004.
Wallace, who averaged 15.1 points and 6.8 rebounds per game last year in his second season, is one of the best young players in the NBA.
