The last game of the round-robin tournament turned out to be the championship game. The Jayhawks and the Tigers both advanced through the tournament without a loss. Photo by Augustus Piazza/KANSAN Kansas, led by its junior ace right-hander Sarah Workman, defeated the Tigers and broke the jinx against Missouri. The Tigers had won the last nine meetings between the two teams going into the game, but the Jayhawks made it clear in the bottom of the first that it was their day. Senior catcher Kristina Johnson got the Jayhawks on the board first when she singed and drove in Sara Holland and Michelle Hubler. The next batter, Christy McPhail, ripped an RBI single that drove in Shannon Stanwix. Katie Malone then singled in Johnson. "I thought we played really well for our first outing," Johnson said. "We seem to be coming together and starting to tel." Kansas's four runs were enough to win the game as Workman shut down the Tigers offense. Missouri managed two runs in the top of the sixth, when Shayna Snarr drove in Wendy Harrison and Kim Slover, but Workman got the next batter to fly out and put the rally to rest. "We still have to iron out a few bugs on defense, but overall, I was pleased," Kansas softball coach Tracv Bunge said. Workman, pitching her second complete game of the tournament, struck out eight Missouri batters and brought her strikeout total to 18 for the weekend. She also shut out Washburn with a two-hit, 10-strike-out performance in the 8-0 win on Saturday. Workman, who was a first-team. All-Big 12 Conference selection last year, entered the season leading the Kansas record books in single-season appearances and innings. The Jayhawks also defeated Johnson County Community College 6-2 yesterday behind the pitching of freshman Jessica Kowal. The Jayhawks won all three of their games Saturday. The first game proved to be the closest for Kansas as it defeated the Central Missouri State Jennies 2-1. McPhail pitched the entire game and got the win for the Jayhawks. Holland drove in the Jayhawks' only two runs. Hubler also had two hits. After warming up during the first game, the Jayhawks cruised through the next two games, downing Washburn and Northwest Missouri State 8-0 and 13-0, respectively. Freshman second baseman Lezli Leathers led the Kansas offense against Washburn, going two for three with three RBI. Heather Chambers also added two RBI. Kowal made her Kansas debut and got great support as the Jayhawks pounded the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri 13-0. Julie True had two hits and four RBI, and Johnson went two for three with three RBI. "We swung the bats better than I anticipated this weekend." Bunge said. "We haven't seen that much live, situational hitting yet in practice, and I was pleased with the offensive performance against Northwest Missouri." The Jayhawks finished their tournament with domination on both sides of the ball. They tallied 34 runs against the opposition while allowing only five.
