Would you stand up and walk on him? Well, the best you could do would be to skip the song. Too funny to be true? Oh, no. William Shatner is singing "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" on the fourth volume of the "Golden Throats" collection. Rhino records has assembled some of the worst celebrities singing some of the best Beatles songs in this its installment, "Celebrities Butcher Songs of the Bates." All of the greatest stars of television and motion pictures perform, Telly Savalas says "Something," while Little Joe (Pesci, that is) screeches out his version of "Got to get you into my Life." The album is really funny. Where else can you hear Mae West's version of "Day Tripper" or Tennessee Ernie Ford performing "Let it Be?" Unless you have a high threshold for pain, however, you may not make it through the entire CD. But that's OK. It is so bad it's funny, but not so funny it's good. The Cramps "Big Beat from Badsville" - Epitaph Before the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Marilyn Manson came The Cramps. They were writing creepy song lyrics and performing outrageous stage antics when Marilyn Manson was still trying to pick out his foundation. Holding fast to this tradition, they do not disappoint with their newest album. "Big Beat from Badsville" of current music, and even have fun with the Goth scene on the back. Sheena's in a Goth Gang. "She's diggin' up the graveyard/Black lips and toenails/Brand new bat wing at the county jail slicks to t h e straight- ahead rock that The Cramps are so good at. They have not fallen prey to the fads There is nothing better than a band that can poke fun at themselves and their fans, all at the same time. BJork—Homogenic—Elecktra If BJork did a country song, she could call it. "I Was Techno When Techno Wasn't Cool." The one Bjork-"Homogenic"-Elecktra advantage to being an old pro in the this arena is that she is one of the few innovators. The new album. "Homogenic," takes traditional classical music and mixes it with techno and Bjork's own amazing voice. Unlike her previous album, "Post," there is no fast-paced dance track. However, there is slow, groovy, bass-heavy songs that will sound good coming out of someone's car stereo-system. The lyrics are poetry and arranged as such within the songs. It is a pleasant surprise to see some sort of artistry in the midst of the wasteland we call alternative music. Here some Ska, there some Ska, everywhere some Ska, Ska. Goldfinger has all ger has all the necessary criteria for the Ska label: short, dyed hair, cool, but not too 311 check. Some tattoos, with various body piercings—check. Pseudo loser attitude—check. Not to say that all Ska is bad or contrived, but this is. Maybe if they sounded just somewhat different from every other band right now, this could be a decent album. Don't get me wrong, there will be some toe-tappin' going on, but as for the long run, I don't see Goldfinger there. It may be because of lyrics like "I ask you what it is you've tasted/Your answers are so hushed/I'm wasted, so wasted." Dude, that is soooo cool. Well, maybe to someone. There was more feeling and sincerity in No Doubt's "Don't Speak," than in this entire album, and that isn't very good. If No Doubt and Goldfinger are being labeled as Ska, my question is, what the hell happened to Ska?
