Your birthday will be great after you hit a few parties tonight. Aries: Today is 6. You may have some moral issues with what is happening around you today. The situation is likely to change the moment you take a stand. If you accept people's weaknesses, you will begin to see their strengths. Taurus: Today is a 7. let your conscience be your guide today in all relationships. A frank remark heats up a social gathering and changes its character. Read a situation as it happens, not your script of what should have happened. Gemini: Today is a 6. Try one more time to get your point across, even if you think it's a waste of breath. Compromise on a few of the minor points if it helps you get your way. Remain cheerful in the face of overwhelming odds. Cancer: Today is a 7. Leo: Today is a 6. With only the slightest effort from you, the creative process takes root and flower immediately. Barriers between people in your life melt away as if they never existed. Humor a young person even if you find his jokes profoundly annoying. Virgo: Today is a 9. Today you are at your most positive, and everyone notices. You suddenly realize that, without even trying, you have become the life of the party. The little things cease to matter when you are feeling magnanimous. Libra: Today is a 7. As the Moon enters Sagittarius later in the day, you will be flooded with a feeling of loving acceptance. Even though Pisces is a water sign, the Moon will make your fire burn brightly as it moves into Sagittarius. You become bolder and more expressive as the day wears on. Embark on a pilgrimage of some kind. Sim finishes third in tennis tourney Next she is going to Disney World By Jason Franchuk k sports@kansan.com Kansan sportswriter There's no time to be goofy be the boy, Christie Sim has matches to win at Disney World next week. Sim was informed yesterday that she was added to the 64-player women's singles field at the National Clay Court Championships in Orlando, Fla. The matches will take place at the Walt Disney World complex. The four-day tournament begins Thursday for Sim, who has been inserted into the main draw and will not have to participate in qualifying rounds. No opponent for Sim has been named vet. Note: Horoscopes have no basis in scientific fact and should be read for entertainment purposes only. "It's not a lot of time to prepare for playing on clay," Sim said. "But I'm glad I don't have to go through qualifying rounds. You have to win three matches there just to get into the main draw." Sim will replace Kansas' No. 1 singles player, Kylie Hunt. The fifth-year senior declined the invitation to the championships because she is still recuperating from surgery on her knee that scrapped her play in the 1996-97 season. Hunt, who also withdrew at the last minute from the team's first tournament last weekend at William and Mary, reached Round 16 in last year's championships. Head coach Roland Thornqvist said Sim earned the chance to play. "The way she played this past weekend, she could really have a great showing in Orlando. Her serve is coming along nicely and she already has a world class forehand working for her." Sim, a senior, was ranked 90th in the women's preseason poll. She is playing the best tennis of her career after going 3-1 and finishing third in the William and Mary Invitational last weekend. Sim defeated three players ranked in the top 50. Her loss was against No. 3 Vanessa Webb of Duke. Sim was one of the few highlights in the opening tournament, Thonqvist said. The coach was not impressed with the team's season debut, which included a flurry of fifth-place finishes in the tournament's three-flight format which involved two Kansas players in each flight. "I don't think the kids went in with the attitudes they needed against that level of competition," Thornvist said. "I would rather see them play good tennis, but it just didn't happen a lot in our first tournament. The team took some licks, but we know what we need to work on." "We want Kyle to compete when there's no worries about her knee," he said. "We're not going to force anything." The Jayhawk's next tournament is the Ohio State Invitational Oct. 10-13 in Columbus, Ohio. Hunt isn't expected to play. Thorngvist and Sim will leave Monday or Tuesday for Orlando. Sim hoped her game would be at the level it was at the opening tournament. "I'm a streaky player," Sim said. "Everything just came together all at once in Virginia (at William and Mary), and I've been playing good tennis. Soccer Wizard Preki deserves shot at Cup Imagine, if you will, the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Team USA sends a baseball dream team Kansas City player exhibits star qualities But then you look at the outfield and see no Ken Griffey Jr. which includes the likes of Cal Ripken, Albert Belle, Mark McGwire and Will Clark. Brad Hallier sports@kansan.com Now, imagine next year's Winter Olympics in Japan. Team USA sends a hockey dream team, but goaltenders Mike Richter and Eddie Belfour are in backup roles also. What? Oh, don't worry, Griffey is the backup, because he doesn't seem to fit. If this happened, would Griffey, Richter or Belfour play? Would Roger Clemens be on the Olympic team if he were a closer? Probably not. Let's look at reality. One of the United States' best soccer players is Preki. He is captain of the Kansas City Wizards and one of the most skilled players you'll ever see. Preki has schooled the defending champion, D.C. United. He had one goal and one assist. He has had two all-star appearances and was named to the AT&T 11 Best last year. So why doesn't he start for the U.S. National Team? applied for citizenship to be eligible to play for the United States in hopes of fulfilling every soccer player's dream: playing in the World Cun. In his first World Cup appearance - at home in Kansas City against Guatemala—Preki entered the game as a substitute late in the first half and lifted an uninspired team before intermission. The United States rallied for a 2-0 victory. This is not a cry to start Preki—that should be a given. But compare Preki's attitude to many sports stars. Preki told U.S. team coach Steve Sampson to play him. Sampson didn't like that attitude and placed Preki on the U.S. B-team. Preki scored a goal and assisted on the other U.S. goal in a 2-2 draw in the World Cup qualifying game in Guatemala. The Yugoslav native became a U.S. citizen in November 1996. He But he did not play or even suit up; for any of the United States' five final-round qualifying gums? Why? Typical of a star athlete, right! Preki has since told Sampson that 'he didn't care how much he played;' he just wanted to play. He said it was his dream to play in the World Cup, and he would help the United States in any way. Preki was rewarded in a crucial qualifying game vs. Costa Rica. With the score tied 0-0, Preki displayed some of the moves previously seen at Arrowhead Stadium. Preki's attitude is admirable. It is hard to imagine a player like him accepting a role as a substitute, but he has. It is a shame that other star athletes would not accept this role. If you are looking for role models, don't look at the Dallas Cowboys' roster. But look 40 miles east of Lawrence where a man with one name has accepted a role in sports that not many would.
