The Jayhawk Connection is a Center for Community Outreach program that provides students with a list of upperclassmen who can help them during their first years at the University. Start school with a new look The program has been active at since spring 1995, but was called "Our purpose is to link upperclassmen with new students," said co-coordinator René Meyer, Liberal senior. "With the new structure we don't pair students up with someone, we make all of our volunteers accessible to students." the Peer Mentoring Program. Volunteers fill out forms that tell information about themselves. The forms are filed into resource manuals available for students at on-campus offices and living organizations. "The volunteers give information about their majors, activities and any other information they feel comfortable telling." Meyer said. "The manuals will be available to any student who wants to get a connection to the University." Aroop Pal, co-coordinator for the program and Lawrence senior, said more than 100 forms had already been turned in. He said the resource manuals would be available by October 6, before advising begins for the spring semester. "We realize that the college transition can be difficult and we want to make that transition as smooth as possible," Pal said. "Our volunteers are ready and willing to assist any student with their adjustment to the University." Pal said the program matches students with students. This gives freshmen and transfer students information from an inside source at the University. "Some of the best resources we have on campus are students," he said. "It will help students with long-term planning and how they can meet people, get jobs on campus and get involved in organizations." Disney catalog orders to be taken in town Dakotah Reservations hiring new employees to handle calls By Ann Premer By Ann Premer apremer@kansan.com Kansas staff writer After releasing the last of its employees Sept. 3, Dakota Reservation, Inc., has begun to re-hire its employees and hire new employees to take merchandise catalog orders for Disney. "Some are returning and some have decided not to," said Bill Shay, Dakotah manager. "I would say that it is probably a 50-50 mix right now of people who are coming back and people who are new." Dakotah, 1601 W. 23 St. Suite 206, is a teleservice center that answers inbound calls for merchandise catalog orders. It has been contracted by Disney Direct Marketing to answer catalog orders. On Sept. 22, Dakotah began sending employees to train at Disney's Overland Park office. The Lawrence branch will start taking calls in mid-October. More than half of Dakotah's staff are KU students, Shay said. In July, the company laid off 78 part-time employees and then the rest on Sept. 3 when Vanguard Airlines consolidated its reservation center in Mission and closed the Lawrence branch. "We tell everyone up front that it is temporary." Shay said of Dakotah has been operating in Lawrence for a year and a half. The company serves other companies' needs by helping them handle their calls, but its services are on an as-need basis from the contracting company. Shay said that Dakotah's contract with Vanguard terminated sooner than the company had hoped or anticipated. employees' positions. Dakotah was contracted by Disney Direct Marketing in Overland Park to take calls through the holiday season. The holiday season peaks after Thanksgiving and ends after Christmas, Shay said. "This is their big season," Shay said. "They are just growing so much." Employee who are trained immediately will work at the Disney branch in Overland Park until mid-October when Dakotah will start to answer calls in Lawrence. If people do not want to work in Overland Park during the transition period, they may wait to train in Lawrence but should submit their resumes. Shay said. "We'll be hiring up until Thanksgiving." Shay said. The company will staff an equivalent of 100 full-time employees, he said. Kelly Newton, a staffing representative from Disney Direct Marketing, said that the company was unsure about whether or not Dakotah's services would be needed after Christmas. "At this point we don't know, we just contracted them until the end of the holiday season," Newton said. Peter Kardash, a director for Disney Direct Marketing, said that they averaged 50,000 calls per day during the holiday season. "We are a very seasonal business," Kardash said. "To take the edge off of our calls, we outsource some of our calls." Dakotah started training employees with the help of Disney to familiarize employees with Disney's operations last Monday, but most of the training will begin next week, Shay said. Besides learning how to catalog orders, employees will also be briefed about trivial Disney information. "People will ask questions like what was the first movie that came out or what was Dumbo's mother's name or strange things like that," Shay said. "We just want to have those answers available or at least know where to find them." POSTAL SERVICE™ Statement of Ownership, Management, and Circulation (Required by 39 U.S.C. 3685) 1.
