Friday, September 26, 1997 The University Daily Kansan Section A·Page 3 Filling minds won't empty wallets Tuition and fees increases lower than other schools By Mike Perryman Kansan staff writer The University of Kansas is one of the most affordable four-year public universities in the country, according to a study released Wednesday that compared yearly undergraduate tuition and fees at U.S. universities. Average tuition and fees at the University increased less than 4 percent for the 1997-1998 school year, from $2.310 to $2.385. Tuition is expected to increase at the same rate for fiscal year 1999, which would affect students in the 1998-1999 academic school year. The College Board's Annual Survey of Colleges showed that undergraduates living on campus at U.S. colleges would on average pay approximately 5 percent this year than last in tuition and fees at four-year institutions. The University's $75 tuition and fee increase was the lowest among Big 12 schools studied. Texas A&M's $326 tuition and fee increase was the largest of the public schools in the Big 12, rising from $2,361 to $2,687. Baylor University, a private school, increased its tuition and fees by $622, the largest increase among Big 12 schools. "It is important to the Kansas Board of Regents and students that tuition does not increase faster than the rate of inflation," said Barbara Conant, director of communications for the Board of Regents. "When tuition increases remain stable, the school's accessibility to students remains consistent." The Board of Regents sets tuition costs for the city Regents universities. Conant said tuition costs at Kansas schools were a good bargain when compared to other state institutions. "KU, as an institution, does not suffer and is not neglected because of its lower average tuition costs," she said. "It is a good school that does a good job of keeping on top of things without using as much money as some schools." The University does more with less, said Tom Hutton, 'University Relations director.' "We have been fortunate because the Endowment Association provides $40 million per year for University renovations and needs," he said. This tends to take some of the burden from students, he said. Hutton said the current tuition of $2,385 was a substantial amount of money, but was relatively low when compared to many four-year public universities.
