Women have cash options Workshop to explain financial-aid programs By Gwen Olson golson@kansan.com Kansan staff writer Financial aid can be a confusing process for students, and students often need resources outside of the University of Kansas. The Emily Taylor Women's Resource Center is presenting a financial aid workshop for women that will explore non-University options for financial aid through loans, scholarships and grants. Biomedical Center 816 W.24th St.749-5750 Hours: Mon-Fri. 9am-6:30pm Missy Hubert, associate director of student financial aid, said she would provide information about financial aid, scholarships and money management. The event will be at 7 tonight at the International Room in the Kansas Union. "It's not a lot different than what I would be willing to give someone in an appointment," she said. "It's just an opportunity to come at a group setting to find out about this information." Hubert said she hoped to give students more information on scholarship searches, especially searches found on the Internet. She said that although Internet sites could be a good resource, there could be some problems for students searching for scholarships online. "Since there are paid and nonpaid searches, there are some scams out there and we want to make sure that they are prepared for this." Hubert said she expected a small group to attend the workshop. "With a smaller group, I think I'm going to be able to ask more questions about themselves and be able to direct a little bit more," she said. "I'll probably be able to do a little more searching and asking about what they really need." Barbara Ballard, center director, said one resource the workshop would cover was the Financial Aid Directory for Women, which is available for student use in the center. "The book provides whatever aid is available under specific topics," she said. "You can look under a specific subject or topic and the book divides the aid through grants, scholarships and loans." By Monica Hodes Special to the Kansan Charity to reap Wheat Meet funds Racing, Jumping and eating spaghetti will all be part of Wheat Meet weekend this year. The philanthropic event began 17 years ago when Alpha Kappa Lambda member Jon Blubaugh and his sister, a Chi Omega member, decided their chapters should co-sponsor a charity event. After Blubaugh died of cancer, the two chapters donated the money raised to the KU Cancer Research Fund. The annual charity track-and-field event, sponsored by Chi Omega sorority and Alpha KappaLambda fraternity, will be from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Stadium. The two chapters will recruit participants, who do not have to be geek, and sell T-shirts until Friday on Wescoe Beach. Last year, more than 300 people took part, and $6,000 was raised. "We get a lot of support from the fraternities because Wheat Meet counts for Hill points," said Josh Bailey, Alpha KappaLambda philanthropy chairman and Wichita senior. "That's a pretty big deal for most houses." Greek houses accumulate "Hill points" through participation in intramural sports.
