It's both the greatest strength and the greatest weakness of his comedy. Consider his newest film, "Silent Movie." No one else would even think of making a non-sound film in 1976. But is Brooks the person to direct such a project? The greatest silent comedians, Chaplin and Keaten, possessed great style and elegance; Brooks has the style of a rumped shirt, the elegance of a discarded shoe. So why is "Silent Movie" funny? SIMPLE. ALL comedy isn't based on style and elegance. Brookes has a sense of humor of human beings who want to stop with good love when he wants to interrupt a tender love scene by having the lady's horse make a "nature stop," he does it. Small matter that the steed is a wooden merry-go-round mount. Brooks merely substitutes wooden manure. The loose-knit story allows Brooks many Review opportunities to indulge in such hjinx. Mel Funn (Brooks), a broken-down former movie director, and his two associates, Marty Yeggs (Marty Feldman) and Dom Dum (Dom DeLuise), try to secure financing from Big Picture Studios for Funn's comeback project—a modern silent movie. THE STUDIO BOSS (Sid Caesar) promises backs only if Funn and Co. can sign contracts with several top Hollywood stars. The trio's efforts to line up talent are made possible by the English Devour, a large corporation that wants to buy the movie studio. The results often look like the most expensive home movie ever made. The timing in much of the editing is shoddy and some skits, such as the one that involves Yeggs, Funn and Dum tumbling around in suits of armor, drag on too long. of the cast. Even Feldman's eyeballet wears thin. FURTHERMORE, THE charming lack of restraint that provides the best comic moment in the series has a tactic, and he's out of his league trying to take pawfalls and slap skids with the rest Still, there are flashes of Brooks' comic genius. As if anticipating such incidents, the director shores up the case by including a character named matinee idols who perform carope parodies. ADMITTEDLY, Brooks suffers from the losses of sound. But he comes through with several sight gags that are guaranteed to amuse him on the most stone-faced morpian. Traffic for KU's first home football game tomorrow won't be held up by construction under way on Ninth Street near Joe's golf department spokesman said yesterday. Ninth St. cleared for traffic The construction, a storm drainage and street overlay project is in its final stage, Arnold Wiley, street department superintendent, will be able to conduct and production equipment will be moved this afternoon and tomorrow to clear the area for game traffic. The $60,000 project should be completed Monday if the weather cooperates, Wiley said. Storm drains were installed more than a week ago, and a leveling and overlay plan was made. The street has to be leveled, Wiley said, so water will drain into the new drainage system. Dips as deep as four inches are being filled to level the street. Wiley said. After the leveling is completed, the street will be covered with one-and-one-half inches of material. Win your wheels. Guess how many Tot staples are in the bowl.
