Student Senate recycling effort collects $2.50 Last week, the Student Senate collected $2.50 for the first 500 pounds of newspaper accumulated in its efforts to organize a recycling program. But Steve Owens, student body vice president, yesterday said he thought growing student interest and "word of mouth" publicity" would make the project a success. Only two of the five planned drop boxes were installed last week at Gertrude Sellars Pearson and Corbin halls. The three others will be in place today at Oliver and Lewis halls and at the Kansas Union, he said. The paper is taken to the Kansas City area to be recycled. Owens said he hoped in the future to recycle the paper at a plant in Oklahoma for it every 100 pounds of recyclable paper. But, he said, before this could be done, the Senate need to find a place in Lawrence to store the paper until a truckload could be accumulated. The Senate is paid 50 cents for every 100 pounds of paper it collects for recycling. The Senate rents a truck from KU to transport the paper. IFC supply sale draws $2,000 from bookstore In their campaign last year, Owens and Tedde Tashseff, student body president, promised to explore the possibilities of a new course. University administrators had expressed an interest then in sponsoring a recycling program. The Kansas Union bookstore may be $2,000 poor because of a supply sale sponsored three weeks ago by the Infraternity Council (IFC). IFC sold notebooks, pens and pencils at cost during enrollment week and the first week of school, said Roger Campbell, Leawood senior. The sale was planned as a service to fraternities and sororites, Campbell said, but anyone who walked by was able to buy them. The men were sold on fraternity and sorority lawns. He said the sale was publicized only at Greek houses and just enough supplies were needed. IFC sold almost all the supplies it or- ered, he said, and in took $2,000 to cover them.
