--- Thursday, September 9, 1976 University Daily Kansan 3 Hambleton critical of opponent's record us. Nancy Hambleton, Republican candidate for the Kansas House of Representatives in the 44th district, said last night that she viewed her opponent, Mike Glover, as an effective politician, but that his voting record wasn't good. Hambleton, former mayor of Lawrence, spoke up to 10 people in the Kansas Union at a rally on Tuesday. "There are times when I don't like the image he presents as a legislator." Hambleton said about Glory. He has a record of speaking for a lot of good causes, but I think he has been effective in getting the bills he has proposed through the House." Hambleton said she supported construction of a nuclear power plant in Kansas. "You have to separate the emotion from the facts," Hambledon said. "I think the record of nuclear power is such that I would have to support the project." She also said she was concerned with the rehabilitation of prisoners through work training. "I'm very much interested in the rehabilitation of people who have been in trouble with the law," Hambleton said. "I'm interested in work-release programs if the people involved are carefully screened. I think work-release programs have merited." "I would like to see industry attracted that would provide good wages and jobs," she said. "I'm not for rapid growth, but I am for quality growth. And you don't ever stand still—you're always moving either forward or backward." But Hambleton said she had confidence in the American political system. "We have to adjust our laws so it isn't as attractive to sit back and take a handout as it is not being handed out." "We all tend to look down on politicians," she said, "but we don't seem to be coming up with any other way in which we would like to be governed."
