Protest survival kit needed in Athens

ATHENS, Greece — Check your supplies before driving off; a supply of water, dried food, a good map and a mobile telephone.
A safari? No, just what some Greek radio stations jokingly say make up the essentials of a street protest survival kit in Athens.

Students have occupied about 500 of the country's 3,140 state high schools, preventing lessons from taking place. Protesters from the
occupied buildings frequently block nearby roads or major highways, often pelting complaining drivers with eggs, oranges and yogurt.
Protesters hurled firebombs, flares and rocks at buildings and riot police in Athens on Thursday, leaving store fronts shattered and vehicles burned. Police fired tear gas and battled groups of protesters, arresting at least 25 people.
Radio programs have become a lifeline for drivers stuck in traffic iams for hours.
Radio commentators suggested bizarre methods of escaping the
blockades: chew on soap, froth at the mouth, pretend to have convulsions and step on the gas.
"That should frighten the students," one commentator said.
Scuffles have become a daily occurrence. And some fear more serious violence is inevitable.
On Wednesday, a driver attempting to move a large garbage bin off a major Athens road was chased by a mob of students but escaped without injury. Two students were slightly injured this week after being run over by irate drivers who refused to stop at a roadblock.

last week while pleading with students to allow him through a barricade. The students reportedly let an ambulance through to take the man to hospital.
Police appear unwilling or unable to intervene and force the students off the roads — possibly scared of the potential public relations disaster if riot police move against teenagers.
Smiley face icon to aid charities

BOSTON—Smile and the world smiles with you.
So hopes Harvey Ball, a graphic artist who earned $45 for designing the ubiquitous smile face for an insurance company 35 years ago. Ball now hopes to gather profits from the round, yellow icon for charity.
Ball has declared Oct. 1 as World Smile Day, and he has formed the World Smile Corp. to market a line of greeting cards, buttons and other items in conjunction with the festivities. Profits will go to charity.

Although Ball created the design, others have staked their claim. Last spring, Ball learned Franklin Loufrani, a 55-year-old French entrepreneur, had registered the smiley trademark in more than 75 countries — and was threatening to sue U.S. companies that sell smile products overseas.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Researchers at Vanderbilt University say it's possible coffee could do more than deliver early morning therapy, perhaps even help people who suffer from depression and alcoholism.
"People drink coffee because they like it, or they like the way it makes them feel," said Peter Martin, director of Vanderbilt University's Addiction Center. "My suggestion is that we really don't know what causes those effects."
