Commissioners to iron out details The Associated Press ATLANTA — Commissioners of the major conferences opened a two-day meeting yesterday aimed at ironing out remaining details to stage a national title game in college football. ABC Sports announced in July it had signed a seven-year deal with the bowl alliance, Big 10 and Pacific 10 conferences, which would create an official national college football champion. champions. The first game will be played after the 1998 season, but the location hasn't been determined. The Rose Bowl will get the top game in 2002, part of a deal to woo the bowl into the pact. The meeting is aimed at resolving issues such as the identities of the other three bowls in the four-year championship rotation, the method by which the top two teams will be chosen and the status of bowl-conference relationships. Commissioners and coaches have been calling for a true title game for years. The Atlantic Coast, Big East, Southeastern and Big 12 conferences and Notre Dame are in the bowl alliance, with the Pac-10 and Big 10 out of the mix because of their Rose Bowl commitments.
