PAGE 6 QUOTE OF THE DAY "I played my heart out, every opportunity I had," Peterson said. "The result of that is not what I wanted, which is being in the Super Bowl game. But I have a couple of good pieces of hardware to bring back and (put) in my statue area. So it feels good." THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN MONDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2013 Adrian Peterson on his 2012 NFL season. Source: Espn.com OF THE DAY Peterson is the first running back to win the MVP Award since LaDainian Tomlinson in 2006. — Espn.com TRIVIA OF THE DAY Q: Who was the last Vikings player to win MVP? A: Fran Tarkenton in 1975. Espn.com THE MORNING BREW Peterson's comeback earns him NFL MVP Adrian Peterson undoubtedly deserved the MVP Award. The NFL announced its regular season awards on Saturday and the winners were obvious and well deserved. Robert Griffin III won Offensive Rookie of the Year, Bruce Arians won Coach of the Year and J.J. Watt won Defensive Player of the Year. The most debated award was the MVP Award. Each award winner deserves our praise and congratulations for his marvelous season, but the most deserving was Adrian Peterson. It came down between Peyton Manning, who led the Broncos to the number one seed in the AFC playoffs, and Peterson, the best running back in the game today. Peterson took home Offensive Player of the Year and MVP after having arguably the best season by a running back in NFL history. He finished just nine shorts of breaking Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record and finished the season with 2.097 yards and 12 touchdowns. His accomplishments aren't just about what he did individually; it's what he did for the Vikings team. He almost single-handedly took a team that was 3-13 in 2011 and helped them earn a playoff berth in 2012. The 2012 season was a rebirth for the Vikings franchise after suffering through miserable seasons in 2010 and 2011. Although the Vikings lost in the Wild Card round to the Green Bay Packers, Peterson and the Vikings were significantly better than everyone projected them to be. The first mistake people made was questioning whether Peterson could come back this year after blowing out his left knee on Christmas Eve in 2011. From the beginning of training camp, Peterson constantly told the media that he would be ready for the season opener against Jacksonville. This was something that fans and media alike questioned. After starting the season fairly slowly, he exploded after the Vikings lost Percy Harvin for the season, when handing the ball off to #28 was the only way the offense could succeed. Peterson should have won the Comeback Player of the Year Award as well, but I understand that Peyton Manning should receive an award for the great season he had (up until the playoff game). You also have to love Peterson's MVP acceptance speech. He said that he is excited to win the award next year, but unfortunately he won't be there to accept it because the Vikings will be playing in the Super Bowl. It may be a stretch to say that the Vikings will be in the Super Bowl next season, but Peterson's confidence in himself and the team should rub off on other players. Yes, there were other great players up for MVP, but Peterson had a season for the ages, and that's something that couldn't be ignored. The scary thing is that Peterson could be even better next season with another offseason to strengthen his knee. Arkansas sophomore Lauren Jordan set the new record in the 1,000-yard freestyle event. Freshman Anna Mayfield broke the 500-yard freestyle record from 1993. "They are a very good team, especially in distance events," Kansas assistant coach Jen Fox said in a Kansas Athletics news release, "Overall, it was a good meet. We knew it was going to be tough, but we saw some good performances today." Kansas had some positive results despite the final score. Senior captain Brooke Brull placed second in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard IM as well as third in the 100-yard freestyle. Her backstroke and freestyle times (56,92 and 52,27 respectively) were season-best times. Her 200-yard freestyle relay team placed second. Junior Alison Moffit swam a season-best time in the 1,000- yard freestyle (10:16.75), while sophomore Deanna Marks placed in both butterfly events. Kansas finishes its dual-meet schedule next weekend against fellow Big 12 Conference school Iowa State next weekend, Feb. 8-9, at home. The meet starts at 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday. The team's next meet will be the Big 12 Championship. The four-day event will start Feb. 27 and conclude March 2. Fox said the team is in a good place and next week's meet will be "really good" for the last home meet.
