PAGE 2B THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2012 THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN QUOTE OF THE DAY "I was told specifically, "You can't talk Former ESPN basketball analyst Doug Gottlieb on the Dan Patrick Radio Show enough Tebow." FACT OF THE DAY SportsCenter has covered the NHL for 457.25 minutes of the 20.41:12.25 minutes it has aired since Jan. 7th. deadspin.com Q: Which athlete was mentioned the most from Nov. 16 - Nov. 22 on the 11 p.m. SportsCenter? TRIVIA OF THE DAY A: Colin Kaepernick (67 times) deadsnip.com THE MORNING BREW SportsCenter is not the same as the years of my youth H v ESPN. I think we need to talk Since I met you nearly two decades ago, my life has been changed for the better. Back then I was a wide-eyed kid, lost in your beauty. You were wise and seemed to know so much about everything. You had worldly experience, traveling across the globe for the greatest events; World Cups, Wimbledons, The Masters. If it was worth seeing, you were there. By Blake Schuster bschuster@kansan.com I loved that about you. Money was just an object if history was on the line, and it often was. We would stay up all night talking, even if you got to the point where you just kept repeating something you had said an hour ago. I didn't care, I was charmed by your voice. Anytime we were together I was learning something. You had expert analysis and cared about the details, as if everything that came out of your mouth had to be perfectly compelling. You were wonderful and I was yours. I laughed when you first said LeBron could be better than MJ. That debate really got heated, but we overcame it because your purpose was never to alienate me, just inform me. Get me thinking. But that's when you started to change. You liked to rile me up and knew which buttons to push. Only when I became uninterested did you move onto something else. I thought we could make it through anything, and felt so sure that when I left for college our relationship would stay the same. I may have headed off to Lawrence, but my heart stayed in Connecticut. Then he showed up. You know who: that Tebow guy. For some reason you couldn't get enough of him. As busy as I was in school I still made time for you, but it seemed like whenever we were alone, you just wanted to talk about him. I felt worthless. Like you didn't care about me anymore. You wanted the attention and you tried to make everything in your life seem much more significant — nobody cares about Jeremy Lin's every move. You just wouldn't stop. All you wanted to do was argue over things that didn't matter. Are the Lakers in meltdown mode after five games? Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III? Which NFL coach is getting fired today? The days of telling me something new, showing me something I hadn't seen, were long gone. I don't recognize you anvmore. I don't recognize you anymore. If this personality suits you best, that's your choice. But I can't do this anymore. I don't care if there aren't many fish in this sea. I can do better than you. It's over, SportsCenter. Henry made an instant impact and Johnson waited for their chance. But he didn't get discouraged. Johnson said the opportunity to learn how to play the game the right way under Self was one of the reasons he chose to come to Kansas. Wednesday No events scheduled "五星战 or not, I didn't want to play college for one year. I didn't want to play college for two years. I wanted to learn the game. I came to the right place," Johnson said. "He was one who always desired to be challenged in practice, always taking new opportunities to learn something different, learn something more, create situations where he'd be challenged and make himself better," Fair said. His junior year, following the departure of four of the five Kansas starters, Johnson finally got his chance. Johnson scored double figures in the final eight games of the layhawks' 2011-12 season, helping the team advance to the national championship game. "He came in here and had good freshman, sophomore years, but we had other guys, we didn't have to depend on him," Self said. "When we had to depend on him, he delivered last year." --was motivational, Johnson felt differently. He walked to Lucas and told him, "Heew you this." This season, Johnson steps into the shoes of many of the players who came before him: Tyshawn Taylor, the Morris Twins and Sherron Collins, where the onus of leadership falls on his shoulders. In his three years at Kansas, Johnson learned from his predecessors. "I didn't really realize it until they left, but the (Morris) twins talked to me a lot," Johnson said. "They just said the little stuff. But they talked to me differently than I have to talk to this group of people, because we were kind of from the same type of area." With some of the younger guys, Johnson has to convey his message in a different manner, changing the tone and the words to motivate, to inspire, to get them to buy into 'the process.' Johnson didn't pile on. One day during running drills, Johnson noticed freshman forward Landon Lucas struggling. Some players yelled and prodded Lucas "hey, come on." "He got to the point where he wasn't about to break but it was getting to him," Johnson said. While others thought the yelling The fatigue washed from Lucas. He finished the drill. "That's what people need to hear sometimes." Johnson said. "They need somebody on their side when they feel the whole world is against them. I did that and now I like like Landon will do anything on the court for me." While his message may change based on the player he's talking to, the one thing Johnson has never stopped doing is leading by example. "He just came off that knee surgery with a hurt knee and stuff, and he hasn't missed any running," Lucas said. "As a Senior, you already know what your playing minutes are going to be, it's tempting for a lot of players to take that time off and say they're去rest their knee and stuff, but he was right there with us." --ing to, one where he is asked to distribute the ball around the court and create open shots for his teammates. Between the nicked up knee that continues to bother him and the transition he's making from the two spot on the floor into the point guard that runs the Kansas offense, Johnson didn't start the season with the same flare that he finished his junior year with. Self has stated his frustration this season with Johnson's struggle to play the game at a faster speed. While his pace is not yet as urgent as Self wants it to be, Johnson is a different style of player than Taylor was when he ran the offense last year. "He has this season to take the role of what Tshawn did last year, making this his team and everyone just follow," senior guard Travis Releford said. And Johnson's mentality of team first fits with the position he's switching to, one where he is asked to distribute the ball around the court and create open shots for his teammates. "He's always been most comfortable in the role of a facilitator," Fair said. "He's a player that enjoys the assist more than the score. He's a player that enjoys his teammates doing well." With Kansas picked to win its ninth straight Big 12 championship by the coaches in the preseason, and the team currently ranked ninth in the nation, expectations are high for the lahwaws. But that doesn't affect Johnson. "I've never felt pressure. This is fun, this is what we do," Johnson said. "The cameras and the media and the fans, they're supposed to give you pressure, but it doesn't give me pressure, it just psychs me up." — Edited by Laken Rapier KANSANCLASSIFIEDS housing announcements ... 785-864-4358 Attorney-Travis Gardner DUI/Traffic/Misdemeanor Affordable Rates (785) 580-9860 traigardnerlaw.com Sunflower State Games seeks energetic and responsible spring and summer interns to assist in event planning and promotions for Olympic Style Sports Fees-vai.
