Zach Hemenway, KU graduate and first-year law student at the University of Nebraska, and Erik Johnson, Bloomington, Minn., senior, tied for 11th place and received certificates of merit for their writing. "It's supposedly good and impressive to potential employers — I hope," he said. Hemenway and Johnson were two among 103 other students at 58 universities to enter the first competition of the academic year of the Hearst program. Johnson said he had heard a rumor that earning an honor from the Hearst competition would help him find a job after he graduated. Crowd Systems, the Kansas City, Mo., company that supplied about 90 workers for last night's game, replaced Manpower as the University of Kansas Athletic Corporation's provider of ushers. A representative from Manpower declined comment about the change in contract. CORRECTION The Nov. 22 edition of The University Daily Kansan contained an error. The article, "Groups begin 'Bonnie Ball'," stated that the Inspirational Gospel Choir sang the national anthem and that Unity, a hip-hop dance group, performed at halftime. Laura Clark, Wichita senior, sang the national anthem and during halftime a lay-up competition between BSU, HALO, AASU, NPHC and Alpha Phi Omega occurred. Unity did not perform. ON THE RECORD An 18-year-old KU student was involved in an aggravated battery about 2 a.m. Saturday in the 1100 block of Massachusetts Street. According to a Lawrence police report, the student was struck in the nose by another individual. A 21-year-old KU student reported to Lawrence police that someone had stolen her Dell laptop computer from her apartment sometime between 4:30 and 11 p.m. Friday in the 800 block of Michigan Street. The theft is estimated at about $1,000. A 22-year-old KU student reported to Lawrence police that someone had trespassed on his property about 1:30 a.m. yesterday in the 300 block of Vermont Street.
