SPORTS 8A THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2004 KU loses top poll ranking THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Wake Forest reached No. 1 for the first time, switching places with Kansas atop The Associated Press men's basketball poll yesterday — even though the fawhawks didn't lose. The Demon Deacons (2-0) didn't have to wait long to play their first game leading the rankings, hosting Yale last night. Kansas won its only game of the season but trailed most of the way before beating visiting Vermont 68-61. Wake Forest opened with Preseason NIT home wins over George Washington (97-76) and Virginia Commonwealth (81-67). "Because of the strength of the ACC in particular and the country in general, I think this is a season when many schools will have the opportunity to be in this position," Wake Forest coach Skip Prosser said. His team probably benefited from an opening less by then-No. 4 North Carolina to Santa Clara. The Tir Heels held eight first-place votes last week but dropped all the way to 11th in the current poll. The Demon Deacons were No. 1 on 25 ballots and received 1,658 points from the national media panel. Kansas had 26 first-place votes and 1,637 points. 'K-Mart' to face former team DENVER - No doubt Kenyon Martin is happy in Denver, a place where he feels wanted and is part of an up-and-coming team. But as he prepares to face his former team for the first time today, Martin can't help but think about what could have been had the New Jersey Nets just shown a little more interest in re-signing him. "If they would have come to me and showed me that they cared from Day 1, from July 1, all this would never (have) be an THE ASSOCIATED PRESS issue," Martin said. "But I didn't feel like the wanted me there." The team's reaction surprised Martin, especially after what he had been through with the Nets. Playing his first four seasons in New Jersey, Martin helped the Nets reach the playoffs three straight years, including trips to NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003. He had his best season a year ago, averaging 16.7 points and 9.5 rebounds and making the All-Star team for the first time. But Martin's big year may have priced the rugged power forward right out of New Jersey. Under new owner Bruce Ratner, the Nets were looking to rim payroll and never made a formal offer to Martin. When the Nuggets offered Martin a huge front-loaded contract, New Jersey had to try and work out a deal for the restricted free agent. So instead of returning to New Jersey, his first choice, Martin ended up Denver in a sign-and-trade deal that sent three first-round draft picks to the Nets and earned K-Mart a seven-year, $92 million contract. "They waited until the last minute until everything was about to develop," Martin said. "It was kind of too late." FOOTBALL In light of his three-sack performance against Missouri, senior defensive end David McMillan was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week. Senior David McMillan Big 12 player of week This is just the second time this season a Kansas football player has been named a Big 12 player of the week, the last being senior wide receiver Brandon Rideau, on special teams, the first week of the season. McMillan led a Kansas defense that did not let Missouri move past the 50 yard line until the fourth quarter. He had three sacks for a total of -35 yards and was a major contributor in holding the Tigers to a total of -6 yards on the ground. "He played phenomenal football for us, and we're very proud of him," said coach Mark Mangino. McMillan completed the game with five tackles, four for a loss and forced a fumble. In his final season with the Jayhawks, he finished eighth on the team with 37 tackles and led the team in sacks, with seven. The Kansas team will have this week off before returning for offseason workouts next week.
