The Regents will discuss a report from the Northwest Education Resource Center in future meetings. In the report, a consultant made 36 recommendations to improve higher education funding, including state universities and community colleges. Throughout this semester, nearly all items have been approved on the Board's agenda. That is not unusual for the Board, Wolff said. "It's a lot of things for the Regents to tackle, but it's a good place to start," said Katie Wolff, Shawnee senior and Senate legislative director. As for any issues Student Senate wanted on the agenda that never made it, Munch said nothing had really ever come up. PROPOSED INCREASES FOR STUDENT HOUSING "It shows the system works.' Munch said. "It's here, we've only got about 16 games left in the fieldhouse. We've got to feel it." Gunbattles still flared in Fallujah as troops hunted hold-out insurgents five days after the military said its forces had Laurence Cooley, a member of the group "I Will Crush You" slept outside of Allen Fieldhouse on Sunday night. Campers officially started camping at 6 on Monday morning, but Cooley wanted to get a head start. Cooley is just one of the thousands of students who will cram into Allen Fieldhouse tonight to see the Jayhawks in their season opener. Cooley said he wanted to be part of every game in the Jayhawks' run to the National Championship. "We wanted to do it because it is the first game of the season and we are the No. 1 fans on campus," Cooley, Ardmore, Okla., freshman, said of his group. Cooley said it was worth it because "I Will Crush You" was No. 1 on the roll call list at midafternoon yesterday and could have first choice for seating tonight. "We have the best team in the nation." Cooley said. "With the four seniors and the freshman talent, there is no reason that we shouldn't win the National Championship." That places Vermont among some of the most notable basketball schools in the country. "You look at some teams they got more votes than and you think this will be a very opener, which it will be." Self said. The Jayhawks may be the preseason favorite, but tonight's opponent, Vermont, is ranked 37th in the nation in the Associated Press poll. The Catamounts are coming off their second NCAA tournament appearance and are favored to win the America East conference again this year. Taylor Coppenrath, Vermont forward, joins Simien and Langford on the John Wooden Award preseason All-America Team and the Naismith Award Preseason Top 50, two of the top awards given to the nation's best men's basketball players. Vermont coach Tom Brennan said playing the No.1 team in the country was a huge challenge for his team in its season opener as well. "I hope our kids are ready to come into Allen Fieldhouse and play," Brennan said. "It is one of the top 10 best places to play in the country." Dave Strano, Lawrence resident, estimated that the driver sped between 45 and 50 miles per hour before a police car attempted to stop him. Ward said the man was speeding in excess of the speed limit, but he was not sure how fast he was driving. Strano estimated there were 12 police cars at the scene. No ambulances were called, and the driver walked away from the incident. A separate raid near the suspected command center uncovered a bomb-making workshop where an SUV registered in Texas was being converted into Jordanian terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, and a U.S. general expressed confidence the battle for the city has "broken the back of the insurgency." "He sat there on the curb for like 20 minutes," Strano said. Ward said the driver had no injuries. Martin John Donaghy was booked into the Douglas County Jail a few minutes before 2 a.m. "We asked him to leave. He was charged with operating under the influence, reckless driving, a stop light violation, three stop sign violations and driving without headlights. then he started giving me this death stare." One U.S. Marine and one Iraqi soldier were killed, U.S. officials said. At a base outside Fallujah, Lt. Gen. John Sattler, commander of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, said the U.S. casualty toll in the Fallujah offensive stood at 51 dead and about 425 wounded. An estimated 1,200 insurgents have been killed, with about 1,025 enemy fighters detained, the military says. Sattler told reporters he felt the U.S.-led attack had dealt a serious blow to the insurgency. "We feel right now that we have, as I mentioned, broken the back of the insurgency. We've taken away this safe haven," Sattler said, adding that insurgents had scattered elsewhere in Iraq where they lacked the resources available in their former stronghold. Iraqi authorities said they arrested 104 suspected insurgents in a raid in Baghdad. The Associated Press Take your first step into the real world.
