Page 10 University Daily Kansan Friday, Jan. 22, 1965 Nomadic Jayhawks Return to Host ISU With its Big Eight title hopes jarred by a Wednesday defeat at Kansas State, the KU basketball team returns to "unfamiliar" Allen Field House for only the second time in its last 12 games to meet Iowa State at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow. The game is an afternoon affair since it is part of the 1965 league television schedule. Kansas carries an 11-5 overall mark and and a 3-2 Big Eight record into Saturday's game after a 71-63 defeat from fiery, aggressive K-State Wednesday at Manhattan. After the Iowa State contest, the Jayhawks take a semester exam break until Oklahoma visits here February 6. IOWA STATE, led by 6-3 forward-guard Al Koch, brings a 1-4 league record and a 5-10 overall mark to Lawrence. KU has beaten the Cyclones twice this year, once in the opening round of the December league tournament, then last Saturday at Ames. Oklahoma State currently leads the Big Eight with a 3-0 record while Colorado and Missouri are tied for second at 2-1, KU is fourth at 3-2 and Kansas State follows at 2-2. "We have played 10 of our last 11 games on the road and we have won eight of those 10 road games," KU coach Ted Owens, said. "I couldn't be prouder of my club, because they've done mighty fine against tough circumstances. Now they have to regroup after the loss to K-State and get mentally ready for an Iowa State team that is dangerous despite its record." KU BEGAN its long stint on the road December 17 with a visit to Cincinnati. Since then, the only Lawrence game it has played was the January 9 league victory over Missouri. The two losses in the 10 road games were to Cincinnati (76-72) and Kansas State. Up to the K-State game, KU had lost four games by a total of 11 points, with the Cincy spread of four the largest. Owens contemplates no lineup changes for Iowa State. At center will be 6-11 Walt Wesley while the forwards will be 6-6 Fred Chana and 6-6 Riney Lochmann and the guards will be 6-5 Al Lopes and 6-1 Del Lewis. Iowa State starts 6-5 Dave Fleming at center, 6-7 Ron Millik and 6-3 Al Koch as the forwards and 6-3 Bob Ziegler and 6-1 Bob Vander Wilt as the guards. KU SOPHOMORE forward Ron Franz, 6-7 Kansas Citian, suffered a knee injury in the Kansas State game but should be ready for Iowa State. Franz is the No. 6 man and sometimes starts in place of Chana. The KU-ISU varsity game will be followed by a KU freshman game with Parsons Junior College. Tipoff time for the frosh encounter is 3:45 in the Field House. KU fresh coach Bob Mulcahy is due to start 6-8 Roger Harris at center, 6-6 John Carter, 6-5 Rodger Bohnenstiehl or 6-6 George Yarnevich as the forwards and 6-5 Ron Lang and 6-2 Wandy Williams as the guards. KU has a 2-1 Frosh record and its next game after Saturday will be Feb. 3 at Missouri. MU handed the junior Jayhawks their only loss in a Jan. 14 game at Lawrence. KU fencers will face Illinois University and Iowa State University in a NCAA triangular meet which will be one of the biggest meets for the team in the '65 season. KU Fencers Face Year's Top Meet Rv Marv Hodson Tim Mitchell, team captain, will fence sabre. Mitchell went to the NCAA championships at Harvard last year. The meet is scheduled for Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. in Robinson Gymnasium. Ten men will suit up for Kansas. Among these men will be Mike Munson and Dave Storer, Lawrence senior, who took first and third place, respectively, in a Wichita foil tournament. STEVE WELLS and Esam El Shafey will fence epee. They took second and fourth place, respectively, during a Wichita epee tournament. "Illinois will be our biggest threat," Coach Dillard said "Last year they were the Big 10 fencing champions and one of the strongest teams in the nation. They have produced a number of All-Americans and Olympic fencers." This year KU has one of the strongest teams ever, according to Dillard. FENCING IS a newcomer as far as KU sports go. In 1957, John Giele, a former sociology instructor, organized the fencing team here. Before coming to KU Giele coached fencing at Nebraska University and Colorado University. Giele, now teaching at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo., produced such great fencers as KU's Jerry Olds. Olds was an All-American in epee in 1960. He also produced a number of state champions. For example, he coached Jim Anderson in epee and Meredith Wilson, nephew of Meredith Wilson of "Music Man" fame. Giele left KU last year and Dillard took over.
