The Sooner swimmers have held the conference championship for the last 10 years. So far this year, they are undefeated. The Oklahoma squad is ranked seventh in the nation by Swimming World magazine. The Sooners are coached by former KU mentor, Jay Markley. Markley left KU after the 1961-62 season and was replaced by Dick Reamon. REAMON SAID Thursday he would go with Don Pennington to lead the Jayhawks in the meet. Pennington won first places in the 200-yd, butterfly and the 500-yd. freestyle events in the K-State meet last week. He is the top-scoring Jayhawk. KU won its only conference dual meet, 59-35, against the K-State Wildcats Reason noted that a Jayhawk win in the Oklahoma meet may hinge on a victory in one of the two relay events. The Sooners have the fastest distance man in the Big JAY MARKLEY OU swimming coach . . . Eight along with the top butterfly swimmer, the best backstroke man, and the best spinner. DESPITE THE tough conference competition, Reamon said, the team was improving on schedule. He expects the squad to be strong finishers in the first division at the Big Eight conference meet March 4-6 at Iowa State in Ames. Reamon felt the conference was tough this year, but the competition was not as stiff as last season. "I expect most of the winning times will break Big Eight records but the field will not be as strong," he said. Iowa State will also be a rough opponent in the conference meet, Reamon added. The NCAA championships will be held in Ames three weeks after the Big Eight meet. Pride in their new facilities and pride in hosting the NCAA finals combined with the help of an assistant swimming coach will make the Cyclones hard to topple. Reamon predicted that next year might be a real strong season for the Jayhawks. There will be a group of outstanding freshmen moving up and only two varsity men will be lost to graduation. Davis, one of Bowman's substitutes, was averaging 4.5. Wichita Players Cut Quickly WICHTTA COACH Gary Thompson said the dismissals were for "failure to meet obligations for the first semester's academic work. Until these obligations have been met they will not be allowed back on the squad." Other sources in Wichita said grades were not in and the two players could be reinstated—though chances "are slight." Fans on the Shockers were themselves shocked over the abrupt dismissal yesterday of 6-foot-10 center Nate Bowman and reserve pivot Gerald Davis. WICHITA —(UPI)—A big question mark hung over Wichita's third-ranked basketball team today. Speculation raged on whether Bowman, a pillar in Wichita's success, and Davis will get back on the team for the second half of the season.
