Page 12 University Daily Kansan Thursday, Jan. 21, 1965 Disciplinary Committee Often Last Stop for Erring Student Bv Judv Farrell The University Disciplinary Committee might be called KU's "Court of Last Resort." The UDC is the highest court of appeal next to the dean of students and the chancellor for all cases referred to it from other University judiciary bodies. THE COMMITTEE is composed of six students appointed by the student body president, two faculty members elected by the University Senate and the dean of men, dean of women, and dean of students. When a student is appearing before the UDC, the dean of his school also sits with the committee. The UDC originally was formed by the University Senate to deal with cheating and plagiarism. By World War II the committee had dealt with more unusual problems, including marijuana smoking and students carrying concealed weapons on campus. The UDC and all other judiciary bodies resolve disciplinary problems with a minimum of publicity to the individuals or groups involved. The committee now receives appeals from other disciplinary bodies, such as the All Student Council social committee, the Interfraternity Council judiciary board, or judiciary boards in campus living groups. It can also handle appeals from the Student Court. THOUGH MANY people inquire about the possibility of appealing a decision, few go ahead with the appeal, John McCulloh, Abilene senior and a member of the judiciary committee, said. McCulloh said most students seemed willing to accept the decisions of University judiciary bodies and hesitate to appeal to the UDC. The University Disciplinary Committee meets only when necessary. Sessions are conducted in an informal manner, and in no way resemble or constitute a trial, McCulloh said. The committee questions the individual appearing before it about the offense and anything about himself which may seem pertinent. The individual then leaves the room and the committee deliberates and generally arrives at a decision, McCulloh said. Penalties which are normally enforced by University disciplinary bodies are reprimand, failure and withdrawal from a course, probation, restrictive probation—probation and withdrawal of privileges—withdrawal of social activity participation or automobile privileges, suspension and expulsion.
