Page 10 University Daily Kansan Thursday, Jan. 21, 1965 LONG-TIME Topeka, KU, sorority, and physical education friends now oppose. Vicki Whitaker prepares to block Belinda Brown's shot as former "Outstanding Nebraskan." Mary Jean Mulvaney makes sure this KU court rivalry stays friendly. Girls Don't Endanger Male Muscle Might Women's physical education at KU does not exist to develop a female Amazon to competing level with the male athlete. Rather it helps many areas that a straight academic course is unable to. Through the development of efficiency in the use of the body comes a gracefulness, a concern for health and hygiene, and a mental and emotional stability based on competition, teamwork and recreation. This, in the words of two physical education majors from Topeka, Belinda Sue Brown and Vicki Cave Whitaker, and one of their instructors, Mary Jean Mulvaney, does more to develop the individual student than any other course at KU. "TWO NEW emphases have brought physical education to the fore," Miss Mulvaney said. "The first began when President Eisenhower initiated the Council on Physical Fitness, which became better known under President Kennedy. The stress came after testing American urban youths and Europeans, but the exercises used were such that the European youths would naturally excel, due to more walking, hiking and manual labor than Americans." The second area Miss Mulvaney stressed was the new emphasis on leisure activities and individual sports. Relief on Way For Food Fans "Many non-majors take courses such as dance, bowling and tennis. There is a long waiting list for water safety courses so that non-majors can teach swimming and counsel at summer camps." Many students tend to crave food during periods of nervous tension, such as final examination week. So this year KU women in scholarship and large residence halls may be able to satisfy this need through survival kits of fruit, candy, cookies, and gum. The kits are a project of the Inter- Residence Council, which sent letters to parents suggesting this final week present for their daughters. Orders are also being taken on campus. Proceeds will go into a short-term loan fund, whereby any resident of the independent women's halls may borrow up to $10, payable in two weeks. Karen E. Shoop, St. John and president of the IRC, said responses indicate the "survival snack" idea has gone over big. For both Belinda and Vicki the interest began with dance and synchronized swimming instruction they took together from grade school through high school in Topeka. Speaking of the merits of the major beyond learning how to teach physical skills, Vicki stressed the give and take of competition. "NOT EVERYONE is good at the same sport, but in class we are not embarrassed to try. Competing with others leads to alertness of the mind, grace and skill of the body and emotional development." Belinda said that playing both captain and team member develops responsibility for making and accepting decisions. They both admitted it was not recess with all play, nor were the courses easy. They must also learn rules, anatomy, and objectives in teaching each activity. "It's a good release for excess energy and the frustrations of college life." Belinda said. Both girls have greatly aided the intramural efforts of their sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and have been choreographers for the house skits. They were also dancers in the fall theater production of "West Side Story."
