University Daily Kansan Page $ Cats Hand Kansas Second Big 8 Loss By Glen Phillips The Kansas State Wildcats rolled over KU last night, 71-63, at Manhattan to give the Jayhawks their second conference defeat. THE PLAY WAS dominated by the two towering centers for the Kansas squads. Walter Wesley, league-leading scorer, led the Jay-hawks with a total of 30 points. For the Wildcats, 6'10" center Roy Smith tallied 25 in the game. The triumph over KU was enough to keep the Wildcats in contention for the Big Eight conference title. The victory evened the league record for the 'Cats at 2-2 and left the Jayhawks with a 3-2 showing in conference play. Wesley continued his devastating work from close in. Hooking the ball over his head from a few feet out, Wesley racked up point after point. From further out his jumping fadeaway shots were deadly. Smith's impressive scoring performance was attributed to the fact that he was playing against Wesley. Wildcat coach Tex Winter said Smith plays his best against men as tall or taller than himself. Smith's best games this season have both been against KU and Wesley, in the Big Eight Christmas Tournament and last night. The classic battle between the two Kansas schools was aired on regional television. Ahearn Field House at Manhattan was sold out for the game. The Wildcats did not go into the zone defense as expected to counter the high-scoring Wesley. With the exception of one short period at the end of the game, defense was a wide-open matter with the man-to-man effort failing to keep Wesley from scoring. KANSAS' GUARDS shot well for the Jayhawks from the outside. Al Lopes tallied 11 for KU with his fellow starter, Del Lewis, sinking nine. Ron Franz and Riney Lochmann were both held to only six points each from the forward spot. The only man, other than Smith. to reach double figures for the 'Cats was guard Ron Paradis. He totaled 13 with some good shooting from the outside. Free throws played an important part in the battle. Both teams attempted 28 bonus tosses. The Jayhawkers made 23 of their attempts good while the Cats only sank 19. The 'Cats defensive game operated well, using a medium press down-court, to keep the Jayhawks from any shooting sprees. Several times the Wildcat defenders grabbed KU passes. A real big story in the game was the Kansas State defense and their rebounding efforts. "If we could have won tonight," KU Coach Ted Owens said after the game, "we would have had the jump on everybody else. As it stands now, I wouldn't be surprised if a team with four losses could tie for the title." The aggressiveness of the 'Cats on the backboards was a factor in scoring several times. The Jayhawks didn't begin to make a real showing on the boards until late in the second half. The Jayhawkers will return to Lawrence for their next two games. The first, Saturday afternoon against Iowa State, will be the first game to be televised from Allen Field House since 1958. The following Saturday the KU squad will meet the Oklahoma Sooners.
