The crash claimed 29 lives. Photographs show the drag chute entwined in the blades of one of the engines with the nylon cords dangling around the edge. The parachute is the type used to slow down some types of jet planes when they land. TINKER OFFICIALS refused comment about the parachute, and referred all inquiries to an Air Force investigating board now in session at Wichita. A quantity of Johnson grass also was found in one of the engines, believed to be one of two on the right side of the plane. The drag chute was found in an engine believed, though not positively known, to have been on the left side. PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE ENTANGLED drag chute were taken by an Oklahoma Journal photographer, John Gumm, and were copyrighted by the newspaper. There was no official word on how the parachute became entangled in the engine. It was possible that an aircraft landed at McConnell Air Force Base near Wichita shortly before the KCI135 took off. The landing aircraft could have dropped the drag chute at the end of the runway and it could have been sucked into the engine of the ill-fated tanker.
