TABLE OF CONTENTS My first trip to a haunted house was one of the bloodiest experiences of my childhood. I had begged my friend Amy to leave the plastic spiderweb-covered gym where our elementary school carnival was in progress to join my sister and me at Catacombs in Kansas City, Mo. She was reluctant to go, but a few werewolves, some black lights and a couple of high-pitched screams later, Amy was leading the way through the twists and turns of the haunted house. We entered an octagon-shaped room with a curtain-covered doorway on each wall. Amy proceeded to look behind each curtain, but doors one through seven were sealed off. With only one of the eight portals left, she decided to barrel through the cloth curtain covering the final door. About 10 seconds later, blood streaming down Amy's face, we were led through a back pathway and out of the haunted house. Amy had failed to find the secret passage way out of the room. I've only braved a haunted house one other time. So, while I appreciate Beth Breitenstein's look at fear (page 8), haunted houses just aren't for me.
