Rockies use speed to beat opponents, spark streak DENVER — The Blake Street Bombers are a distant memory. Now, the Colorado Rockies use speed to torment opponents. "With their speed and their ability to get on base, it completely transformed their lineup," former Houston Astros manager Phil Garner said. "The team doesn't have to depend on the long ball to score runs. They allow a manager to do so much and they set the table for the bigger hitters in their lineup." MLB So disruptive is this dynamite duo that the Rockies didn't hesitate to tinker with a lineup that had powered them into the playoffs once Taveras recovered from an injury that kept him out of the final three weeks of the regular season. Willy Taveras and Kaz Matsui atop the batting order are enough to mess with the mind of any pitcher or catcher. The Rockies reinserted their center fielder into the leadoff spot for the NL championship series, bumping Matsui to second in the batting order. That relegated Rookie of the Year contender Troy Tulowitzki to seventh and sent streaking Ryan Spillborghs to the bench. The move paid off when Taveras sparked the winning rally in Game 1, then made a diving catch to save a key run in Game 2, which the Rockies won on his bases-loaded walk in the 11th inning. But the Rockies kept rolling right along, sweeping Arizona to stretch their streak to 21-1 heading into the World Series. Taveras joined the Rockies from Houston last winter, and Matsui was rescued from the New York Mets last season after flopping on Broadway. A seven-time All-Star in Japan, he never found a comfort zone in the Big Apple. Both of them missed significant stretches with injuries this season, but one or the other was usually leading off. Together, they provide a top of the lineup that most managers can only dream about. - Associated Press Kick the Kansan Pick games, Beat the University Daily Kansan Staff, win a $25 gift certificate to Jayhawk Bookstore and get your name in the paper. FC Dallas 'Abe Thompson, left, and Kansas City Wizards' Jimmy Conrad vie for a header during the first half of an MLS soccer game Saturday in Frisco, Texas. Kansas City won 2-0 and secured a spot in the playoffs. Chicago burns LA by one MLS ASSOCIATED PRESS Thorrington, once a reserve with Manchester United when David Beckham was a star with the same team, scored in extra time Sunday and the Chicago Fire beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0 to earn the MLS eighth and final playoff spot. BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. — Blanco's going to the playoffs and Beckham's not. John Thorrington made sure of that. In a meeting of the league's two marquee designated players, Cuauhtemoc Blanco of the Fire and Beckham of the Galaxy, it was a goal by Thorrington — a late substitution — that sent a Toyota Park-record crowd of 7,234. Thorrington, who was waived by the Fire in March, worked out with the Galaxy in the preseason and re-signed with Chicago last month, got open in the middle against goalkeeper Joe Cannon. When Cannon came out to try and stop him, he just popped the ball over his head and into the net. His teammates then chased him around the field to celebrate. "The ball just set up nicely for me and thankfully it went in. It took quite a long time for it to clear his hand and then cross the line," Thorrington said. "Just a big relief to get in the playoffs." Sidelined by injuries most of his first season with the Galaxy, Beckham came off the bench for a second straight game, entering in the 58th minute to a loud and mixed reception of cheers and boos. The Galaxy, which entered the game on a seven-game unbeaten streak — as did the Fire — was in no mood for levity after the excruciating loss, one that likely ended the career of veteran midfielder Cobi Jones, who plans to retire after spending his entire career with the Galaxy. He also had a free kick in the 90th minute but the ball was headed away. "We had a good run but obviously early season is what affected us more than anything," Beckham said. Beckham had a shot from the top of the box in 77th minute, but it sailed over the goal to a chorus of boos. All the Fire needed was a tie to make the playoffs. The Galaxy needed a victory because it was three points behind the Fire and owned the tiebreaker by winning an earlier meeting.
