8A NEWS THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN MONDAY: OCTOBER 22, 2007 CRIME FBI investigates magician case ASSOCIATED PRESS Magician David Copperfield has denied that he forced himself on a woman, but neither authorities nor his lawyer would provide details about the investigation. The FBI conducted investigations in Las Vegas of a warehouse owned by Copperfield and a casino theater where the magician has held regular shows. BY KATHLEEN HENNESSEY ASSOCIATED PRESS "An unidentified woman has made serious allegations against David Copperfield," lawyer David Chesnoff said Friday in a statement. LAS VEGAS — Days after FBI agents searched a Las Vegas warehouse belonging to David Copperfield and a casino theater where the magician regularly performs, his lawyer rebutted an allegation that Copperfield "forced himself" on a woman. "It is important these allegations be put into perspective," Chesnoff said. "Although authorities have not revealed her identity to us, we know these allegations are false because David Copperfield has never forced himself on anyone." Neither Chesnoff nor law enforcement officials would provide details about the allegations or the warehouse search. Seattle FBI agent Robbie Burroughs said Thursday that the Las Vegas investigation was part of a Seattle case. "The Seattle case is pending, and that means we can't say anything about it," Burroughs said. FBI agents on Wednesday searched the Hollywood Theater at the MGM Grand casino-hotel, where Copperfield regularly performs, casino spokeswoman Yvette Monet told The Associated Press. Copperfield performed two shows Wednesday, which were the last of his most recent run. Associated Press Beyonce shakes it in Ethiopia MUSIC Fans welcome singer to country's anniversary celebration BY ANITA POWELL ASSOCIATED PRESS ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — Beyonce Knowles joined the millennium celebrations in Ethiopia with a spirited concert in the capital of the Horn of Africa nation. Some 5,000 adoring fans in Ethiopia — a country normally unimpressed by Western music — turned out to see Beyonce. In this country, even teens tend to be loyal to music in the national language, Amharic. But Beyonce got a hysterical welcome when she came onstage. "I want to thank you," the R&B star told the screaming crowd Saturday evening in return. "You have been one of the best audiences of my lifetime." In a country where many women wear simple white, cotton dresses, Beyonce wore costumes covered in sequins or shiny, space-age material, from a modern interpretation of a hula girl with shiny black tendrils replacing the grass skirt to a high-necked Victorian-style top paired with sequined hotpants. Beyonce's concert was part of Ethiopia's yearlong celebration of its 2,000th birthday according to its ancient calendar. "She's hot," said local nightclub owner Enoch Nicano. "She's more than hot." Beyonce Knowles performed to 5,000 fans in Ethiopia on Saturday. In a country where Western music often has not been popular, the singer received a warm welcome at the country's 2,000th birthday celebration. Rapper Ludacris opened the show, although the audience did not respond well to his art.
