More Lawrence police officers lead to increased DUI arrests CARRY OUT ONLY. Void with other offers Exp.10/30/91 By Melissa Rodgers Kansan staff writer Having more police officers on the streets of Lawrence this fall has led to more drunken driver arrests and a crime bill for the Lawrence Municipal Court "We have been arresting about 14 to 15 drunk drivers a weekend this fall," Sgt. Mark Warren of the Lawrence county said. That is more than last year. Lawrence have set up at least six different driver's license check lanes this month, Warren said. Police officers check for valid licenses, but if police suspect intoxication, they will administer a field sobriety test. According to Lawrence police records, 64 drunken drivers were arrested this September, 20 more than last September. The city of Lawrence hired 27 more police officers in January after residents voted last fall for a one-half-cent sales tax increase. The larger force of 101 officers probably is the reason that more drunk Lawrence police made 20 more drunken driving arrests this September than last September. drivers have been caught, Warren said. On weekends, at least three Lawrence police cars are assigned to selective enforcement duties. The officers patrol the city watching roadways for suspicious activity instead of defining a specific area, Warren said. Last year, KU police reported 11 drunken driving arrests, but this year KU police have arrested 32 people so far for driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Burdel Welsh of the KU police said the increase was due to more active enforcement. Training also has been added to detect signs of intoxication, he said. Joy Jones of Lawrence Municipal Court said that from July through September 1990, 106 charges of drunken driving were filed. This year for the same time period, 170 charges were filed, an increase of 60 percent. Donald Strole, a Lawrence attorney, said he thought the increase in charges had slowed the Municipal Court schedule. "If a first appearance is scheduled for next week, the next court appearance is not until January," said Strobe, who clients charged with drunken driving. City Prosecutor Tom Porter said the law required that a trial be scheduled within 180 days after a charge is filed. "Trial date settings may be extended, but it isn't to the point where it is causing a real problem," he said. The maximum penalty in municipal court for drunken driving is 180 days in jail and a $500 fine.
