FOR FOOD THIS GOOD Hormel UNLV uses hidden camera to check NCAA compliance LAS VEGAS – UNLV officials, using a video camera hidden in an air conditioning duct, secretly taped a conditioning class during which basketball players may have been practicing earlier than NCAA rules allow. The Associated Press School officials said yesterday that they uncovered evidence that "certain activities" were conducted in the class that might constitute basketball practice. They sent a memo to three assistant coaches to respond to the allegations. A lawyer for Tim Grurich, one of the assistant coaches, expressed the coach's outrage about the taping and claimed that university officials had opened his mail. Grurich said he would speak at a news conference today. "It's just another effort by the university to destroy the basketball program," said Grurgrich's lawyer, Roy Smith. "Where are the stops? Are they Brad Booke, University of Nevada Las Vegas legal counsel, said the video camera was installed only after school officials failed to dispel charges that players were practicing prior to the official Oct. 15 start of practice. Booke said that the doors were locked to the campus gym where the class was conducted and that the unit was in session (and used it) when was breaking any NCAA rules. "Obviously, this is not a happy situation," Booke said. "The university is in a position of great risk. It has to do what it reasonably can do to make sure that we're monitoring ourselves and complying with NCAA rules." Smith, however, said that the tape showed conditioning exercises directed by the three coaches but that noth- ing of them should be construed as a basketball practice. "There's no basketball. There're no imitation basketball's," he said. "The tape just shows them out there running wind sprints." "I sought an informal disposition of this," Booke said. "We had hoped for a private resolution without public disclosure." Booke said that university officials' had hoped to keep the entire incident; private and that he had sent the tape to a lawyer for one of the coaches, along; another who said he came onto one day of official practice to make up for any alleged violations. "We attempted to go in the gym on several occasions and found the door locked, sowe decided to do this way." he said. "Physical education classes are not typically conducted behind closed doors." Booke said he ordered the videotap- ing after conferring with other univ. r- portions of officials. The school's policemen department conducted the taping. Booke said UNLV's urgency in dealing with the allegations was heightened by the fact that the NCAA had a badge against the basketball program. Booke said that determining whether there was a violation would require an interpretation by either school officials or NCAA officials. The program is banned from post-season play this year and live television because of previous infractions.
