She said that community leaders would plan more conferences but that they would discuss more specific issues. "Change doesn't have to come about because government changes laws," he said. Kathleen Seebelius, D-Topeka, said the conference was a positive esten "The expertise to solve problems in Lawrence, Kansas, is right here," she said. Sebelius said the community needed to take steps with children' issues instead of waiting for state or federal government to get things done. Those who attended the conference were divided into smaller groups to discuss the ways business, education and childcare could help the children in the community. Carl Ricketts, from KPL Gas Service Co., said that his group, which discussed education, thought parents needed to get involved in their children's education before they began school. Hypnosis helps smokers kick habit walk away from cigarettes for good By Constance Goetz Special invitation Kevin Dines was a smoker since the seventh grade. He tried to quit at least 29 times but never succeeded. At age 21, he could not get through the day without smoking at least one pack of cigarettes. But since Oct. 7 that he has changed, Dines had not had a cigarette once that day, and he sweeps he no longer feels "My body was programmed to crave a smoke, especially after a good meal," said Dines. Denver junior "Now I catch Dines said he attributed his quitting to the power of hypnosis. On Oct. 7, Dines and 125 other smokers participated in a 30-minute group hypnosis intended to stop the smoking habit. The program, conducted at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, was sponsored by the American Lang Association of Kendall County. The American Long Association of Kansas has been sponsored by Gerry Lewis since a year for seven years. He has earned a Masters in Psychology from Columbia University. before beginning the hypomis. Greer explained that the group hypomis worked by reprogramming the subcon "The intelligent mind knows smoking is bad for your health, but people still keep puffing away." Greed said. He said that ambling with a way or locating with anxiety. "The key to changing this is to get the emotional part of the mind to agree with what the intelligent mind knows," he said. Dines said he remembered becoming entirely relaxed during the hypnosis, and then he remembered nothing more. What Dines, and many others who reached the hypnotic maze, did not consciously hear was Greer's persuasive and compassionate nature. "Look at the smokers around you," Green said to the group. "Their clothes smell fluffy. Their smoke is repugnant. They don't look healthy. Now that you can point them out, you can see how far beyond they are you." The participants were hypothetized for 20 minutes three consecutive times during the program. Each time, the underlying message during the session was clear: "Smoking is a bad habit that can only harm you." For the 6,000 people a year Greer has helped nationwide, the success rate within three weeks of the hypnosis is 54 per- cent. Vicki Allen, director of the American Lung Association of Kansas, agreed with Greer's statistic and said that hypnosis had the highest success rate of any method for breaking the smoking habit. "The Association has found that within a year, most of the participants have stopped smoking completely," Allen said. Dines admitted that every day, he thinks about having just one more cigarette. "One more smoke couldn't hurt," I think, "he said. "But something tells me to remember how much harm smokers are doing to themselves, how yellow their teeth are and how bad their clothes smell. That's how I get through the smoking urges."
