8 University Daily Kansan / Tuesday, October 29, 1991 Computer 'mailboxes' thrive Electronic bulletin boards give hackers an outlet for information By William Ramsey Kansan staff writer The worst news and the best gossip are all part of what drives a thriving exchange among computer hackers in Lawrence. Anyone can call one of many electronic bulletin boards in the area by using a computer, a phone modem and software designed for that purpose. A bulletin board system, or BBS, acts like an electronic mailbox. People can exchange written messages, read information from around the world and share software programs. The 30 or so bulletin boards in Star Trek are based from Star Trek on sexuality. Leo Mauler, Lawrence junior, has been calling the boards for three years and said the number of Lawrence BRS's had gone up since he began. discuss ideas and talk to other users. He said he used the boards mainly to "People who want to learn and want to know things and have inquiring minds are the only people who call," Mauler said. He said that a computer modem adequate for calling the boards costs about $75 and that a better model costs about $100. Mauler helps run a popular system called the Rockchalk BBS. The menu for the Rockchalk BBS has sections like "Wesco Beach," a general message exchange, and "Alas Poor, Hoch." a forum designed for people in KU building which was struck by lightning and burned this summer. Mauler said the Rockchalk BBS used to be run from the KU campus, but that it was moved off campus when the phone line it was hooked to was Chris Sykes, a secretary in the School of Education, said the Rockchalk BWS was the first bulletin board she called when she bought a modern two months ago. "It's interesting," Sykes said. "It is like this little whole sub-culture. A lot of these people have been doing it for years and all know each other." Frequent bulletin board users have nicknames. Their gossip, questions and messages are stored on computer and can be browsed. One user can leave general messages for everyone or can leave computer mail for a friend to pick up. In addition to the exchange, Sykes said she enjoyed the software that allows her to interact. She said she also read through the informational files that many Lawrence bulletin boards pull from a global or national network. A global network, called Internet, has expanded in recent years and includes information on a variety of topics. Across a telephone line, information can be sent from Internet to a BBS operator who acts as a local source. Stephen Figgins, Lawrence senior, began his own bulletin board in Febu- ral 2014. He devoted his BBS, called Ars Humana, to providing information about the humanities. "Most boards are just pastimes or hobbyies, said Figgins, who estimated that he spent an hour each day maintaining his computer bulletin board. Figgins said about 100 people had used his system to chat with other users or to read files on various subjects. "Many of them are just students looking for a diversion," he said. Lydia Ash, Ft. Morgan, Colo., senior, said most of the bulletin boards in Lawrence were free. Some charge a nominal fee. Ash works at the KU Computer Services Facility and said the center kept a list of numbers for local bulletin boards. First U.S. bungee-jumping death occurs in California PERRIS, Calif. — A bungee-jumping instructor was killed in a leap from a hot air balloon in what is called the U.S. death from the thrill sport. Hal Mark Irish, 29, of Mirada, Calif., fell more than 60 feet to his death Sunday after coming off his bungeck cord in a demonstration in Perris, 55 miles southeast of Los Angeles. The North American Bungee Association, a trade group for the growing sport that started five decades ago, is in the midst of death was the first in this country. Bunge jumper attach themselves to an elastic cord and leap from heights, plunging head first by launching back up as the cord recools. Enthusiasts insist that the jumps are safe with proper equipment and training. Irish worked for The Ultimate Jump Company in Los Angeles, said a man who identified himself only as the firm's owner. Irish had been bungee jumping for about six months, making about 20 leaps, the man said. On Sunday, Irish was demonstrating a jump from a balloon hovering over a dirt road, police said. Irish leaped from the barn. The bungee cord extended normally, but as he bounced back up Irish came off the cord, said Riverside County Deputy Coroner Rick Diaz. Irish died an hour later of multiple injuries. It wasn't immediately known how Irish attached the bungee cords to himself. However, literature published by The Ultimate Jump Company, said jumpers wore a seat and a chest harness to attach themselves to four bungee cords. Underwater carving of pumpkin gains man ultimate prize The Associated Press CLARK LAKE, Mich. — Tim DeGrazio didn't win any awards for his underwater pumpkin carving abilities. He gained a fiancée instead. Nearly 20 other divers this weekend cut and carved under the 54-degree waters of Clark Lake in a contest for the ugliest or best-looking pumpkin. DeGrazio carved: Will you marry me? Debbie Frederick, his sweetheart, was filming his underwater efforts when he turned his entry toward the waterproof camera. "She must have had a mask leak when I showed it to her because she started getting water inside," DeGrazia said. DeGrazio and Frederick plan an above-ground wedding in Las Vegas, Nev., next month. Would you give up the chocolate milk for a gooey candy bar? For an apple? "The U.S. government taxes its citizens on behalf of multitudes of services and functions it performs, some of them noble, some of them stupid, some of them destructive and shortsighted, some of them quite murderous — but in any event, a hefty percentage of them is disapproval at any given time of a large segment of the tax-paying public." But dentists and consumer advocates worry about the cavities. Chocolate milk contains sugar as well as cocoa. WASHINGTON — Two frosty, cold glasses of milk: one plain, one chocolate. Which would you choose? The dairy industry figures the choice is between the milk and the candy bar.
