12 University Daily Kansan / Monday, October 28. 1991 Senator amends remarks against Hill About 40 protest Wyoming's Simpson for comments made during Thomas hearings The Associated Press CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Saying it was time "for a little honest reassessment," Sen. Alan Simpson apologized for his behavior and harsh comments about Anita Hill during Senate confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. The Wyoming Republican told a group of about 300 at a GOP fundraiser that the last couple of weeks had been very painful and said he had "no one to blame but myself." Simpson was one of Thomas' strongest defenders and Hill's biggest detractors during the hearing on Hill's allegations that Thomas sexually harassed her a decade ago. He angered feminists by attacking Hill's credibility, at one point suggesting that she had a secret crush on Thomas. About 40 people protested against him Friday when he made an appearance at the University of Worning, his alma mater. "I have been riding high, a bit too cocky, arrogant," he said. "I think it's time for a little honest reassessment, and I'll be doing that." Simpson said it had been personally uncomfortable to see his "good name equated with McCarthy, sleaze, slime, smarmy, evil, ugly, mean-spirited, slasher, vindictive, menacing and much, much more." He said he would take the lead of both Thomas and Hill, who had said it was time for reconciliation. "I do not blame the media for anything, nothing. I do not blame activist feminine groups for anything, nothing. They're blameless," he said. "The responsi- sions it is mine, and I shall handle it and handle it well." Among those in attendance were Wyoming natives Defense Secretary Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne, head of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Gregory was created by two Utah men, Steve Bennett and Ruel Ruffo, who took his name from "gregos," Greek for vigilant. Florida man accused of selling term papers The Associated Press Two South Florida students expelled from major TAMPA, Fla. — Two criminology students submitted term papers that a professor considered not only awful but also criminal. After flunking the students, William Blount, head of the University of South Florida criminology department, did some sleuthing that led to the filing of a second-degree misdemeanor charge against the man accused of being thereal author. A. Engler Anderson, 31, failed to appear last week for a court hearing on the charge of selling a term paper or dissertation and could be held without bond it caught. While the students were bounced out of their major and one was kicked out of school, the only way that Anderson could be held accountable was through the courts. $500 to the criminology department. Blount said the papers in late 1989 were for his course on "victimless crime," which covers issues such as prostitution and gambling. When he asked the two students to correct the papers, one did nothing but change the margins. The other gave bizarre answers. "The state attorney's office wanted to prosecute. They were very diligent," Blount said. A prosecutor recommended that if convicted, Anderson should donate "It was pretty apparent they weren't handing in their own work," hesaid. Blount said students told him Anderson charged between $125 and $500, depending on the length of the paper. Anderson's writing career has included stints at several newspapers, including the university's student newspaper, The Oracle, and the St. Petersburg Times, where he worked as a news correspondent in a suburban Tampa bureau, the Times reported in its Saturday editions. Anderson is believed to be living near Palm Beach, according to the report.
