Halloween food drive to help Salvation Army

Collecting cans — not candy — will be the goal of some KU students Halloween night.
KU Students Against Hunger is sponsoring "Trick or Treat for Cans," a canned food drive, to benefit the Lawrence Salvation Army shelter, 946 New Hampshire St.

"It's a chance to help less fortunate people who may not be enjoying Halal food."
Between 6 and 8 p.m. Thursday, students will visit houses in Lawrence to collect cans of food, said Tim Dawson, president of KU Students Against Hunger.

Russell said the sororites would not go out Halloween night with KU Students Against Hunger. Instead, groups from KU's 14 sororites collected cans Thursday night and will go out again Wednesday night.

The group also plans to sell T-shirts commemorating the event, and the group that collects the most cans will receive a plaque.
The organization set a goal of 5,000 cans this year, he said.
The cans will be donated Nov. 11 to the Salvation Army, along with the cans collected Halloween night by KU Students Against Hunger.
"It's a steep goal," Dawson said.
"But hopefully we will reach it."
While everyone is encouraged to attend the event, Dawson said the organization focused on working with KU fraternities and sororities to

Mrs. Capt. Violet Windham of the Salvation Army said that the food would be used mostly during the holiday season at the shelter but that some items might be used at other times during the year.
"We joined so we can raise more cans," she said. "This way, we're reaching out to both students and the Lawrence community."
