Imelda Marcos plans return to Philippines after exile of six years

MANILA, Philippines — Nearly six years after driving Imelda Marcos and her husband into exile, Filipinos are causally awaiting the return of the former first lady whose massive shoe collection became a symbol of the Marcos' excesses.
Plans for Marcos' visit next month have not been announced, but it could include a stop at the Malacanang presidential place, where her 1,700 pairs of shoes and other personal items are on public display.
So far, the only sign of the scheduled visit has been a drive to collect donations for Marcos, once among the world's wealthiest women.
"Our understanding among ourselves is to welcome her with solenity and quiet dignity," said retired Brig. Gen. Pacific de Leon, one of several former army officials handling security for Marcos.
While courts have pursued charges against the Marcos family, the attention of most Filipinos has been increasingly focused on problems such as inflation, crumbling infrastructure and natural disasters.
Recently, the hottest topic in the local press has been an allegation that Foreign Secretary Raul Manglapu hired an American mercenary to assassinate opponents of President Corazon Aquino.
