The new vacuum will be used once a week to clean the playground. Jennifer Hoeffner / KANSAN Motor show will feature new safety devices, lightweight cars The Associated Press CIBHA, Japan — Confronted by slumping auto sales and rising concerns about the environment, Japanese car makers are unveiling new emissions-burning engines and recyclable materials. The Tokyo Motor Show, which will open this weekend, will be filled with these lightweight vehicles, which may give up to 50 miles per gallon in city traffic. An array of new safety innovations include an automatic drowsiness detector, door airbags and cameras that indicate whether the vehicle is veering from its lane. Shoichiro Toyoda, president of Toyota Motor Corp., said car makers in the 1990s must understand that a new and more intolerant world exists among automobiles, humans and the earth. The emphasis on economy cars, which first made Japanese cars popular abroad, comes after several years of matching cars towardlarger and luxury-orientated auto's. Nobuhiko Kawamoto, president of Honda Motor Corp., said economic stagnation and environmental problems had put the world auto market in a state of confusion. Honda officials claim that one of their new engines unveiled at the biennial show can achieve 49 miles per gallon in city driving. Environmental and economic concerns have led to more sleek, efficient models, automakers say. Honda's EP-X features an egg-shaped, aluminum body with a total weight of less than 295 pounds. The driver sits in the middle of the car, and a single passenger sits directly behind. A video camera mounted at the back takes the place of a rear-view mirror. Toyota's AXV-III, which the company describes as the gentler sedan of the future, has airbags in the front doors to protect passengers from side collisions. The cruise computer also measures the speed but also measures the distance to the car in front and maintains a safe distance. A video camera monitors the road lane markers and voices a warning if the car leaves the lane. Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said its male- female concept cars, the mR.1000 and mS.1000, embody a "small is beautiful" theme. The male model is a two-seater runabout with an open top and four-wheel steering. Its counterpart seats four and has rear seats that turn slightly inward to make conversation. The cars use recycled plastic, and a solar panel built on the roof powers a ventilation fan. Nissan Motor Co. said it designed its Cocoon model for closely knit families. The car encloses six passengers in a cocoon-like environment, the company said. Instead of a door key, the car has a fingerprint detector that admits people it recognizes, then automatically adjusts the driving position to that person's pre-set preference. An automatic drowsiness detector monitors the driver's actions, releafs a refreshing scent and sounds a buzzer when it detects sleepy driving patterns. Many companies also will show electric or solar-powered cars Flowers4Less We do weddings, funerals, corsages, and boutoniers!
