Suicide-machine inventor draws criticism and praise
Two more deaths strike up threats to strip doctor of license

PONTIAC, Mich. — Two more deaths aided by a suicide-machine inventor known as "Dr. Death" drew praise yesterday from a right-to-die organization and threats from officials to revoke his license and charge him in the deaths.
Jack Kevorkian, a doctor who in 1990 helped Alzheimer's patient Janet Adkins die by hooking up to a suicide machine he built, called authorities to report that he had helped two more women die.
Kevorkian, a 63-year-old pathologist, directed police to cabain about 40 miles north of Detroit. They met the doctor there and found the bodies of two women, both connected to devices apparently used in the attack.
Sherry Miller, 43, of Roeville, had suffered from multiple sclerosis. Marjorie Wantz, 58, of Sodus, had suffered from a painful but not terminal pelvic disease.
"I bless the doctor, I really do," Millie Gast, a neighbor of Wantz, told the Benton Harbor Berail-Paladium. "I've seen the woman in so much pain. I hope they don't do anything to him."
Wantz received a lethal injection using a device similar to the one Adkins used, while Miller inhaled carbon monoxide through a mask, said Geoffrey Fieger. Kevorkian's lawyer.
"He was present," Finger said. "He provided the expertise. He provided the equipment."
But he said Kevorkian did not assist directly in the deaths.
The Hemlock Society, a right-to-die organization, praised Keviankul but said the suicides under-scored a need for specific laws governing physician-assisted suicides for terminally ill patients.
"Clearly, these women were suffering and wanted to die," the Hemlock Society, based in Eugene, Ore., said in a statement. "Kevorkian's motive was purely humanitarian."
But Hemlock Society staff attorney Cheryl K. Smith added, "This type of aid hoc assistance in suicide for the dying is wide open to abuse because there are no ground rules and no criteria."
A judge dismissed a murder charge against Kevinian in the Adkins案 after ruling that Michigan has no law against assisted suicide. But Kevinian was barred from helping people commit suicides in Oakland County and could face contempt charges if found to have violated the court order.
Sheriff & Capt. Glenn Watson said it could take two weeks to determine whether to file charges.
State Sen. Fred Dillingham, the sponsor of a bill to outlaw assisted suicide, said he had spoken with the county prosecutor and state Attorney General Frank Kelley about revoking Kevorkian's medical license.
"My feeling is we need to punch Kevorkian's lights out right now," Dillingham said. "He's proven himself to be a danger."
