STREET DELL 1941 MASSACHUSETTS Retired professor works on statues Wearing protective glasses, Elden Tefft chisels at a limestone buffalo's head while he urges passerbys to give carving a try. By Michael Graham Special to the Kansan Tefft, retired KU professor of art, is creating a group of statues called "Keepers of Our Universe" at Bur Oak Park, Second and Indiana streets. Tefft, who volunteered to create the limestone statues, is known more for his bronze work. He was one of the first sculptors in Britain. He served United States from foreign countries. Some of his bronze sculptures include the University seal in the Kansas Union, the Jayhawk in front of Strong Hall and the statue of the 10- The statues at Burcham Park are designed to be a community effort. Anybody, regardless of their artistic background, is encouraged to chisel at the rocks, Teft said. in trusted statuses "Keeper of man's relationship with the epiphany." foot "Moses" in front of Smith Hall "We make a reference in the title to man because man is responsible for what has happened to the universe and he is responsible for what will happen to the universe." he said. When finished, "Keepers of Our Universe" will be statues of a buffalo, a fish and two deer surrounding a cenotaph in the garden with the universe above their beads. Although the environmental movement is popular now, Tefft said he developed his concept more to honor Burcham Park than to respond to the movement. He startled developing the ideas for the statues in the fall of 1988. "I have never responded to trends or faat at the time they are prevalent," said Joe. Even before the park was built, the area was a special place for him, he said. When making a sculpture, Tefft first cleans the rock by chiseling away the outer layer that has been eroded by the weather. He then makes a scale model to determine whether his idea will fit the stone. Finally, he draws lines on the rock to indicate where he should carve. Tefft's son, Kim, who is helping him carve the statues, said there were different ways to begin a sculpture. "Sometimes you have to develop your design to accommodate the stone you have to work on, and other times you have to create a idea you want to do," said Klim Tefft. The limestone used in the statue was donated by Beyers Stone in Saint Marys, about 30 miles northwest of Topeka. The Lawrence Parks and Reecreation department created the mounts for the statues and landscaped part of the area. In comparison to other public statues, "Keepers of Our Universe" has cost taxpayers nothing. "People don't realize what a bargain they have received because the stone was donated and Teff voluntered to do the piece," said George Osborne, superintendent of parks and forestry for Lawrence Parks and Recreation. Los Angeles man charged with planning assassination attempt on President Bush The Associated Press LOS ANGELES—A man stockpiled dozens of guns and claimed to be scouting out a spot from which he could assassinate President Bush when Bush visits the Ronald Reagan presidential library next month, authorities said. Thomas Robert Ward, 45, of Oxnard, Calif., was arrested and jailed without bail Tuesday for investiture of weapons in connection with firearms after 34 guns, including a dozen automatic weapons, were confiscated at his home. Also seized were silencers, grenades and 27,000 rounds of ammunition, Sheriff Cmdr. Vince France said. "Mr. Ward came to our attention because, according to information we received in July of this year, he made remarks threatening President Bush," Secret Service agent Dou Carver said. Carver would not elaborate, but the Los Angeles Times yesterday quoted a neighbor of Ward, Samantha Waltz. Waltz said that he told her he planned to assassinate the president. The newspaper also quoted an unidentified law enforcement official. The official said that Ward told a police informant he had scouted the area near the Reagan library for a child, which he could get a clear shot at Bush. Bush, Reagan and former Presidents Ford and Nixon are scheduled to attend the Nov. 4 dedication of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Public Affairs Center in Simi Valley, Calif., 50 miles north of Los Angeles. Ward was not a member of any subversive or militant groups and had no serious criminal record, France said. Ward was not immediately charged with threatening the president. France said the weapons confiscated included an Uzi submachine gun and M-16 and AK-47 rifles that had been converted to fully automatic. "Ward was not a weapons dealer or a collector." France said.
