8 University Daily Kansan / Thursday, October 24, 1991 AT&T credit restrictions may confuse students $150 limit affects residence hall students who use long-distance telephone service By Tracy Drake Special to the Kansan AT&T tots its service as "The Right Choice," but for students who live in University residence halls, it's the only choice. When students move into KU residence halls, they automatically receive AT&T long distance telephone service. But not all students understand its restrictions. "I was confused because my calls weren't being processed," said Julie Suroff, Leawood sophore. "I thought I was dialing the wrong number." What happened to her telephone service can easily happen to anyone using the AT&T College University System, or ACUS. She never realized her long distance phone bill had reached its designated limit. "Each student has a $150 credit line available to them," said Darren Rodney, AT&T service operator. Students can request to have their limits lowered to a minimum of $50 but cannot have it raised past the designated $150. Students can make partial payments between bills to keep their long distance service from reaching its limit. "I thought something was wrong with my telephone, and it wouldn't dial correctly," Suroff said. "I didn't occur to me that I could be up to my limit." She said that her bills last year had been small so it had never occurred to her that she could have reached her credit limit. Her bill reached the limit during one billing period, and her service was stopped for three days. "When a bill accumulates to half of the limit, a courtesy letter is sent to let the student know where they stand," Rodney said. But Suroff did not receive a letter in time. "The billing date was Sept. 20, and I received this courtesy letter that was postmarked Sept. 26," Suroff said. How to prevent service interruption The letter was not sent when she reached half of her limit so she did not know that her service would soon be cut, Suroff said. Her service was resumed three days later when her payment was recorded by AT&T. Monitor the lengths of each call you make. Call in the evening or on weekends when rates are lower. Make sure your payment is on time, correct and contains your account number.
