Watkins fills prescription for full-fledged pharmacy at KU By Kerrie Gottschalk Kansan staff writer They deal a lot of drugs on the KU campus. But their operation, at Watkins Memorial Health Center, is licensed under a different license. About 50 college student health centers nationwide have pharmacy services, he said. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offers noncampus pharmacies in the country. Last month, the pharmacy filled about 6,650 prescriptions. In fact, employees at the pharmacy at Watkins work at one of only a few full-service pharmacies at college health centers in the nation, said John Baughman, chief pharmacist at Watkins. This week, in recognition of Kansas Pharmacy Week, Watkins pharmacy is highlighting the services it offers to KU students. Baughman said that the pharmacy provided not only reduced-price prescriptions but also offered counseling and education about allergies and reactions to medication. Because KU is a state school, the pharmacy can purchase most medication at a lower price through a state contract with drug companies, he said. "The pharmacy is no-profit pharmacy," said Charles Yockey chief of research. but it is a break-even charge." Kristen Fulkens, Wichita junior, said she will be taking pharmacy to fill all of her prescriptions. Yockey said the center was fortunate to have a full-service pharmacy within the health center. "The biggest complaint we get is the wait to have a prescription filled," he said. "Every time I get medication, they do patient counseling, even if I get the same medication all the time." "Fulks understand what the medication does." Jessica Winter, Chesterfield, Mo, senior, said that occasionally she had to wait at about 30 minutes at the phar- mer and that the wait usually was not too long. Voyckey the center was in the process of hiring another full-time pharmacist to assist during busy periods and to provide evening-hour services. It is uncertain when position will be filled, Yockey said. Three full-time pharmacists and one or two paid interns work in the pharmacy. First-year pharmacy students also help but are not paid. Despite the sometimes long wait to fill prescriptions at the pharmacy, Baughman said he encouraged students to use the services. "We welcome patients' questions at any time," he said.
