Level 2 Burge Union 864-5697 Diverse economy helps state survive recession By Mauricio Rios Kansan staff writer Kansas has not been hit by the recession as hard as the rest the nation, a KU professor said during the 15th annual economic outlook conference Friday at the University of Kansas. Norman Clifford, assistant professor of economics and director of economic forecasting at KU's Institute for Public Policy and Business Research, told about 150 people that there would be room for economic growth in the state after the recession. He said the state's solid manufacturing industry, oil and gasoline industries, and growth in business in Mississippi, like shipping Kansas survive the recession. During the past five years, there has been no indication that Kansas is worse off economically than the rest of the nation, Clifford said. Anthony Redwood, professor of business and executive director of the institute, told the conference meeting in facing a monumental challenge. Only the service sector and part of the manufacturing sector have improved significantly during the recession, he said. The agriculture and aircraft I've been hurt, he said. Redwood said that in the future, the state should attempt to further diversify the economy. industries have been hurt, he said. He said that Kansas was too conservative in dealing with the struggling economy. The state should take more chances with plans to develop a strong economy such as putting a greater emphasis on the expansion of services. Redwood said that the unpredictability of the agricultural business hampered efforts to deal with the economy. David Burress, assistant professor of economics, did not speak at the conference but said yesterday that although economists were optimistic about the state's economic progress had been slow. Kansas has fared better in the recession than other states, but students still might face tuition increases, he said. Burress said he thought KU students would still encounter some problems when they tried to find jobs. The majority of KU graduates who try to find jobs in Kansas face difficulties because the number of people looking for jobs is greater than the number of available positions, he said. Senate leaders question scope of probe into Thomas leak The Associated Press WASHINGTON — The FBI will investigate the leak that led sexual harassment allegations against Clarence Thomas to become a public part of his Supreme Court confirmation, Senate leaders said yesterday. But the question of whether the probe should extend beyond the Thomas incident to other congressional leaks remains in dispute. Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press," said an investigation should and would be conducted. "The question is the scope of the investigation," he said. "I have said right along that this should be an investigation, but of other recent leaks as well." Minority Leader Bob Dole said the investigation should focus first on the leak of allegations by law professor Anita Hill that Thomas made sexually harassing remarks to her when she withdrew from a sexual orientation Department and later at the Equa Employment Opportunity Commission. "There may be other areas we want to go into, but this is the one the public believes we're going to sweep under the rug." Dole said on the NBC program, adding that he supported investigating other leaks. Drs. Pohl & Dobbins A family practice dedicated to excellence in eye care.
