University Daily Kansan / Monday, October 21, 1991 5 NATION/WORLD BRIEFSE National party refuses to recognize David Duke White House representatives said they wanted nothing to do with former Ku Klux Klansman David Duke, a Republican who is a runoff candidate in the Louisiana governor's race next month. Some political scientists have said that although Duke's views are more extreme and single-minded than the GOP in general, the racial strategies used by President Bush have helped pave his way. John Sununu, White House chief of staff, made it clear yesterday on ABC's "This Week With David Brinkley" that the national party had threatened to fire Duke in his Nov. 16 faceoff with Democrat Edwin Edwards, a former governor who narrowly led Duke in Saturday's primary. White House-backed incumbent Gov. Buddy Roemer, whoswitched from Democrat to Republican a few months before the election, ran third. "David Duke is not the Republican nominee, "Sununu said. "He is an individual that has chosen to call himself a Republican. He was not supported by the party there. He is not supported by the national party." Speaking for Bush, Sununu said, "The president is absolutely opposed to the kind of racist statements that have come out of David Duke now and in the past." Dehradun. Anti-abortion leader to seek presidential nomination A national anti-abortion leader launched his Democratic presidential campaign when he said that he tried to conceal the indications as a single-issue candidate. Wichita The Rev. Pat Mahoney of Boca Raton, Fla., a leader of the national group Operation Rescue, announced Saturday he was joining five prominent Democrats in a run for the nomination. Mahoney said the three would be starting abortion clinic protests in Wichita this summer. "Ihave alarger national network right now than any other candidate," Mahoney said of the 120 anti- abortion groups run by Operation Rescue. Mahoney, 37, said he chose the Democratic ticket because he thought anti-abortion voters had no voice in the Democratic Party. "To have a voice in national Democratic politics, you have to bow down at the altar of choice. We are going to take a sledgehammer to that altar of choice," Mahoney said. Sharon told the radio that Shamir "has led Israel on this mistaken path and continues to anesthetize the people against...really terrible dangers." At a meeting later in Tel Aviv, Teishai decided to leave the government Oct. 30. Neeman said he would comply but also would resign as leader of Teishai because the party's decision was premature. "I saw this as a victory of feelings over reason," he said on Israeli televised program *The Voice*. Teihyah has three seats in Israel's 120-member parliament.
