Old favorites Connick, Prince try some new sounds Harry Jr. not up to par in 'Blue Light, Red Light' Everybody's wild about Harry, and he knows it. Harry Connick Jr., the deliverer of jazz to the masses, recently released his sixth album titled "Blue Light, Red Light." Its release, long anticipated by his fans of all ages, falls just short of the first five. Connick came into the limelight on the jazz scene nearly three years ago with the Grammy-winning soundtrack to the movie "When Harry Met Mally." Born and raised in the jazz capital of New Orleans, Connick has been playing jazz with the Grammy-winning collection of classics, third in his list of albums, that Connick's talents became nationally known. entowing this smash soundtrack a year and a half later, Connick simultaneously released the big band album, "We Are in Love," and jazz trio album, "The Band." He also further broadened his audience and established Connick as a permanent fixture in contemporary jazz. a perennial. Nothing like the previous Connick albums, "Blue Light, Red Light" incorporates big band swing with the syncopated rhythms of classic jazz. In this attempt for a new, ground-breaking sound, the album leaves the listener in a state of confusion as to whether it's swing, jazz or some incomprehensible mixture of the two. Perhaps the two most enjoyable tunes are the album's dedication numbers. The first is a poignant ballad dedicated to model and Connick's longtime girlfriend, Jill Goodacre. The tenderness in both music and whispering vocals convey an honest feeling one truly can visualize. The second is a dedication to a world-renowned native U.S. sculptor titled "He Is, They Are." Featureting a simple bass line and plenty of ranges for Connick's voice, which is often compared to Frank Sinatra, this track sticks to a big-band theme deviating slightly with a jazzy trumpet solo from Lerov Jones. "Blue Light, Red Light" will please a jazz fan because of the freedom of the jazz style has. However, the big-band fans carried over from Connick's previous albums may be disappointed by this one's lack of continuity. Keeping in mind what Comick has done to promote jazz music, everybody can still be wild about Harry but not necessarily wild about this album. Prince's 'Diamonds and Pearls' worthy of respect The "Prince" of funk is back, and he's brought his New Power Generation with him. Together again for their first album since the soundtrack to "Graffiti Bridge," Prince and NPG blend strong, grinding bass rhythms with high-energy dance beats to create "Diamonds and Pearls." We got our first view of the new album with the single and video, "Get off, released a few weeks before the "Diamonds and Pearls" street date of October 1st. Starting with a piercing scream, the track bursts with a bass line so atomic you had better turn down the volume to save your speakers. Prince's signature sexual reference-laced lyrics accompany all this, of course. This comes as no surprise to previous Prince fans, and it comprises the bulk of this album. Although Prince's lyrics and main themes have remained the same, the music has changed dramatically from his days with the Revolution. Within the NPG, we find a soul songstress, a rapper, a sampler and a variety of backing vocalists. Combined with Prince, the resulting sound is more soulful and streamlined funk with rap overtones. Perhaps the most original and unusual track on the album is "Strollin". In this track Prince captures a toe-tapping, easy-listening sound complete with three-part harmony While snapping along to the beat, you must constantly remind yourself who you are itening to because of the difference from any thing he has done before. The pace quickens immediately back to it original form. It continues on the rest of it path, alternating between a club-orientate beat and a lingering, end-of-the-evening style complete with thumping rhythms through out. Although "Diamonds and Pearls" is not an outstanding achievement, it is definitely a respectable education to the master of sensua funk's repertoire.
