Guide ranks KU academics atop Big Eight

A recent college guide has ranked KU atop the Big Eight academically and as one of the top seven state universities in the nation.
The 1992 Fiske Guide to Colleges, written by Edward Fiske of the New York Times, gives KU four of a possible seven colleges. Social life and overall multiality of life.
The guide describes the University's libraries as well equipped and notes that the office of study abroad extends its services to more than 100 countries.
The guide compares the University to Ivy League universities such as Harvard University and Princeton University.

KU might be academically comparable to Eastern schools, but KU does not have the abundant financing that Eastern schools have, Brinkman said.

"I've always felt like the combination of good students and a good faculty is the most important combination, and we have them both," he said. "We have excellent faculty members who are very dedicated. They like working with students, and we have excellent students."
Brinkman said KU was a well-rounded university that combined the elements of what was expected from a good university.
"I think there are high standards here," he said. "I think our expectations are higher than most places in the Midwest. We get students who respond to that, and if they don't, they unfortunately drop by the way."
Brinkman said he thought that KU was becoming more popular.
"I think more people are discovering the University of Kansas," he said. "We get students from a broader base in the Midwest. We have a good mix of people who have increased our strength in some areas, and the word is getting out."

"The Fiske Guide helped in telling people what was here," he said. "It's always been here, and people are proud of what's here. I think he's done a lot of research that covers the overall quality of the University. Therefore, when he says we're good, I think he's right."
Brinkman said the guide helped sell the University to prospective students.
KU insurer switch means lower rates

A switch in student health insurance providers this fall means a smaller cost increase for students who are covered by KU's plan.
If the University had stuck with its previous provider, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Kansas Inc., students insured through the University would be 38 percent increase over last year's 38 percent increase over last year's rate for individual health insurance.
But with KU's change this semester to G-M Underwriters Agency Inc., rates would increase only about 7 percent over last year's rates, said Mike Lambert, former chairperson of the KU Student Health Advisory Board.
G-M and Blue Cross/Blue Shield were the only two bids received by the all-student health board. KU students are not required to have health insurance under the University's or any other plan.
Blue Cross/Blue Shield was the health insurance provider for the University for the last two years.
Last spring, Lambert and the board recommended that Student Senate choose G-M Underwriters because the company would provide coverage similar to Blue Cross/Blue Shield but would offer lower premiums.
There will not be a change in the type of coverage with the new insurer,
G-M also agreed to cover under-
graduates enrolled in as little as nine hours. Under Blue Cross/Blue Shield, G-M will be responsible for enrollment for coverage was 12 hours.
Under G-M, graduate students must be enrolled in at least three hours, and doctoral students must be enrolled in a graduate course for KU's student health insurance.
-G*M is a small company, but it is well-established and it has a good reputation," Lambertsaid.
However, there has been some confusion among students about the new policy, said Jim Boyle, assistant director of health services at Watkins Memorial Health Center.
He said his office received some telephone calls during the summer from students who wanted clarification on what they had to pay for the coverage.
Boyle said G-M made an error on its application cards, which were mailed this summer to most KU students.
The mistake erroneously led applicants to believe they had to pay three months' premium in advance in order to receive the coverage, Boyle said.
G-M inserted a correction in the mailing, but not all students applying for the coverage are doing so through the mailing.
Boyle said students who had been previously enrolled in the Blue Cross/Blue Shield health insurance plan and had been current on their payments would only have to pay a one month's premium, which is $48. That applies only if the student has chosen the monthly payment plan.
Lambert said students who had let their insurance lapse or who were new to the plan would have to pay the $164 premium in order to establish credibility.
Though health insurance is not mandatory at KU, both Lambert and Boyle recommended KU's plan for their students be covered by another health insurance plan.
Lambert said he thought the student health insurance was a bargain because not all services were covered by the student health fee.
"I believe that KU has one of the best, most comprehensive health plans within the Regents system," he said.
Cigarette smokers risk many types of cancer, study says

Based on a new study, institute researchers said Wednesday that smoking played a major role in cancers of the mouth, esophagus, pancreas, larynx, bladder and kidney, in addition to lung cancer.
The study said smoking was the major cause of 91.5 percent of oral cancers among men and 86.7 percent
of larynx cancers among women.
WASHINGTON — The National Cancer Institute estimates that cigarette smoking will cause more than 157,000 cancer deaths this year, more deaths than caused by smoking-related heart disease.
The study said that only about 12 percent of lung cancer patients survived for more than five years in the period 1981 to 1986.
The study estimated the total number of deaths due to cigarette smoking at 157,228 in 1991.
Student exchange with Japanese sister city offers look at new culture, businesses

"It's an effort to serve an audience that wasn't reached." he said.
Stoltzenberg, who also is a professor of business law, said the program in Japan emphasized business. He said this was important for institutions between the United States and Japan.

"People were very friendly and very helpful," she said.
But Ravala said she and the other students had to adjust to unfamiliar situations.
"Most of the food was cold, so we had to get used to that," she said.
Ravalo said the rooms where the group staved were so small that there was only space
for two beds.
She said the experience was worth the $2,650 tuition.
"It was like living in a suitcase," she said. "But we loved every minute of it."
Ravalo said people in Japan did not use cars as much as people in the United States. Instead, the Japanese use public transportation like buses and trains.
"If students ever get the chance, they should go," she said.
Stoltenberg said that because this was the first year of the program, he and other organizers would look for ways to improve it.
"The students' evaluations were positive," he said. "I think the summer experience this year was a good start."
