NATION/WORLD UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Monday, April 29,1996 5A Gunman slays 32 in Tasmania The Associated Press PORT ARTHUR, Australia — A gunman who slaughtered 32 people at a popular tourist site and nearby pub was captured today by police after he set fire to a guest cottage where he held three hostages. The gunman, whom police identified as a 29 year old with a history of psychological problems, opened fire with a semiautomatic rifle on tourists at a colonial prison site on the island of Tasmania yesterday afternoon. It was the worst shooting massacre in Australia this century. "Various massacres would pale into insignificance when you look at what has happened in Tasmania," said Tasmanian Police Commissioner John Johnson. The arrest ended a 12-hour standoff at the bed and breakfast, where the gunman had barricaded himself with the cottage's two owners and a guest. The hostages' fate was not immediately known, but police said the gunman had been the only person they saw inside the house after it had been set ablaze. Among those killed at the Port Arthur historic prison complex were two Canadian tourists and 30 Australians, including several children and a baby, witnesses and police said. One American was among 18 people injured. Police said only that the man, from Washington state, was not badly hurt. Witnesses said the gunman had mingled casually in the crowd at the prison complex before pulling a rifle from a tennis bag and shooting methodically at visitors. He moved on to a local pub, shooting and killing more people, before fleeing to the nearby Seascape bed and breakfast cottage about 5 p.m. yesterday. By early this morning, more than 200 local and special police units had surrounded the guest house. Police tried to negotiate by phone with the gunman, who fired at them with two heavy caliber military-type rifles, Deputy Police Commissioner Richard McCreadie said. The top and bottom floors of the cottage were burning when police arrested the gunman outside. Witnesses said a helicopter had landed nearby and an ambulance had headed toward the blazing cottage. Other details of the arrest were not immediately available. About 500 tourists were milling around the prison compound about 1:30 p.m. yesterday when a young, blond man drove up in a Volkswagen with a surfboard strapped to the roof, a witness said. He carried the tennis bag. An unidentified Melbourne woman told Australian Associated Press that she hid under a table. Afterward, she said, "There were people just sitting there in their chairs where they'd been eating—dead." The attacker continued shooting outside the cafe, firing at screaming tourists who were trying to flee. Survivors of Israeli air raids mourn dead The Associated Press NABATIYEH, Lebanon — Eyes red and swollen from crying, thousands of black-clad men and women marched to a cemetery yesterday behind ambulances carrying the bodies of nine family members killed in an Israeli air raid. The youngest victim was a 4-day-old girl. Throughout southern Lebanon, refugees returned to battered homes yesterday, and villagers buried their dead in a somber start to Islam's most sacred holiday. The Islamic world marked the first day of the faith's holiest feast, Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, but most of south Lebanon's Shite Muslim population was in mourning. United Nations officers said Hezbollah guerrillas and Israeli troops were abiding by the cease-fire that took hold Saturday, ending the worst flare-up of Arab-Israeli fighting in 14 years. In Nabatiyeh, a market town facing Israel's self-proclaimed security zone, thousands of people gathered for the funeral of a mother, her seven children and her daughter's fiance. They all perished in an Israeli air raid on their home April 18. "Irael said they destroyed Hezbollah. It's not true. They just killed civilians," Sheik Abdul-Amir Kabalan, a senior Shiite cleric, said in a short speech before the burial. In the village of Mansouri, thousands of villagers gathered to mourn four children, ranging in age from 7 months to 9 years, who were killed by a missile from an Israeli helicopter gunship. All told, 162 people were killed and 339 wounded in the 16 days of fighting, which reduced some villages to rubble. Most of the dead were Lebanese civilians. Take Your Mind Off Finals!
