American League The eight players are: Nichole Gaultney, a forward from St. Louis; Kendyl Michner, a midfielder from Germantown, Tenn.; Jennifer Fecke, a goalkeeper from Burnsville, Minn.; Lindsey Loeffler, a defender from Norman, Okla.; Shayna Teutsch, a midfielder from Albuquerque, N.M.; Jackie Horton, a defender from Germantown, Tenn.; Christy Clark, a forward from Overland Park and Traci Kesterson, a midfielder from Olathe. "I'm really pleased with this recruiting class," Walker said. "Our goal was to fill the holes left by last year's late recruiting efforts. Goalkeeping, goal scorers, and natural side sided players will compliment the role players returning next season. "Each of these freshmen brings a new level of experience to the Jayhawk roster." Kansas will be in its second season of NCAA competition and its first in the Big 12 Conference. The Jayhawks finished the 1995 season with a 6-12 record. League. Recalled RHP Jose Lima from Toledo. SEATTLE MARINERS—Placed RHP Bobby Ayala on the 15-day disabled list. National League carry a child?" Robinson recalled "Thevsaid. 'No.' ROBINSON: SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS—Placed RHP Rich DeLuca on a rehabilitation assignment with San Jose of the California League. Continued from Page 1. Within a week after her MRI, Robinson had surgery to remove the ruptured disk. It was Sept. 7. Her parents flew from California, and Haack, with the rest of the Jayhawks, did what they could. But the pain was all Robinson's. Any sort of movement became an obstacle. There were staples in the middle of her lower back, closing the incision. Robinson could not lay on her stomach in the hospital bed, though, because it would open the incision up. So she had to lie right on the staples. "The worst thing was getting up and going to the bathroom," Robinson said. "The nurses had to physically lift me out of bed." National Football League ARIZONA CARDINALS—Signed WRI Marcus A day after the surgery, Robinson could hardly walk. But two days later, she went to class. "Standing was the best thing," she said. "It hurt more living around." Robinson's rapid recovery continued throughout the fall. She picked up a softball for the first time while she was home during Thanksgiving break. Even though Robinson wasn't supposed to pitch yet, she persuaded her brother to play catch. "I said, 'No one will ever know. We won't tell dad. Were not tell mom. We'll just see how it feels.'" Robinson said. "I could tell right then, it was going to be so much better. It was an incredible change." It wasn't long before her teammates knew that Robinson was regaining her form. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, first baseman Jacqué Wenger and Robinson played catch in Anschutz Sports Pavilion for the first time since the surgery. "It hurt my hand," Wenger said, smiling. "It was just amazing how she came back." While Robinson recovered from the pain in her back, she had to struggle through the mental anguish of watching Kansas softball go on without her. It wasn't the best time to be sitting on the sidelines, either. The Jayhawks went 14-0 in the last fall and won the Big 12 Conference Fall Preview tournament. Her teammates never excluded her, but Robinson couldn't fully enjoy the Jayhawks' success. "I didn't feel I had done anything, so I didn't feel like I had a right to celebrate," she said. Now she does. About a two-inch vertical scar and a minimal amount of pain are practically the only reminders Robinson has of her past trials. She is in the midst of a a career-high 14-9 season. "Then we looked at each other and said, 'This is the last time we're going to play at KU,'" Robinson said. "The very first day of practice for Katie and I was the scariest day of our lives. But it seems like it was just yesterday." A doubleheader starting a 1 p.m. tomorrow at Jayhawk Field and a single game at noon Sunday against Oklahoma will be the last regular season games Robinson and fellow senior Katie Morgan play. The two have joked this year about playing their final games in various conference towns — Ames, Iowa, or Lincoln, Neb., or Columbia, Mo. Dowdell, TE Oscar McBride, LB Simon Shanks and RB Ryan Terry.
