KANU honors bluegrass show
Flint Hills Special celebrates 25 years

Nestled beside the Art and Design Building and Mallott Hall stands a modest brick building where, 25 years ago, Dan Crary, then a KU graduate student, introduced a radical form of music to the KANU listening audience.
KANU's Flint Hills Special, one of the longest running radio programs on public radio, will celebrate 25 years of broadcasting at 7 p.m. Sunday from Liberty Hall, 642 Massachusetts St. The broadcast will be live and will honor Cray.
Crazy, who is known for his pioneering, flat-picking style, will appear with noted musician, songwriter and vocalist Laurie Lewis and her Grant Street Band.
"Dan Crary is a monster guitar player," said Dick Powers, KANU radio personality and host of the Flint Hills Special. "He is one of the best. Listening to him play is amazing."
Lewis was named Female Vocalist of the Year in 1994 by the International Bluegrass Musicians Association.

Cryar founded and led the Bluegrass Alliance — a band that established lead guitar as a standard part of bluegrass music — after the folk revival music of the 1960s.
"Bluegrass music was like the rock-and-roll of the 1930s because it was so radically different from anything that had been done before," said Scott Tischner, long-time KANU listener. "It is a language that has survived a trip across the ocean."
Blugrass has its roots in Irish and Scotch music brought to America by immigrants.
In 1971, Cray approached Richard Wright, KANU radio personality and associate professor of music and dance, with the idea of incorporating bluegrass music into the then-conservative KANU program.
"I always got a kick out of the fact that such an intelligent guy was into the reading of bluegrass," Wright said. "He was always very down-to-earth and very intelligent."
Crary conducted an academic life simultaneously with his musical career. He studied theology for four years at the University and turned to human communications studies, in which he holds master's and Phd. degrees. He has taught as an associate professor at California State University, Fullerton, since 1974, during which he has managed to juggle a solo tour and band tour schedules including appearances in Europe, Ireland, Japan, Australia and the South Pacific.

Commission targets downtown growth

Downtown Lawrence is expanding, and the Lawrence City Commission wants a better plan of attack in dealing with its growth.

The proposal stems from commission frustration in dealing with potential downtown developers.
There are no set guidelines or policies regarding the redevelopment of downtown as it expands to Vermont and New Hampshire streets.

said, and the commission is ill-equipped deal with those demands.
The commission needs to decide what downtown is and make developers work within those guidelines, not the other way around, he said.
