American League trips again to senior circuit By DON HOLLINGER Face the facts. The American League is not quite as good as the National League. The All-Star game proved it. 100-POINTER It is true that Frank Robinson and Al Kaline were missing from HERSHEY, Pa. — (UPI)—Wilt Chamberlain, of the Philadelphia Warriors scored 100 points here in a 169-147 victory over the New York Knickerbockers on March 2, 1962. Any reasons given for the American League's loss, their fifth straight, would merely be poor excuses for a poor performance. What is wrong with the American League? the American League's roster. They might have made a difference, but it is doubtful that they could have made the winning difference. As the saying goes, "It takes nine men to win a ball game." Tony Conigliaro, the Boston right fielder, made a backhand stab of a line drive in the tenth inning that temporarily saved the game for the AL. "sluggers." Robinson might have missed it. DERBY BOOMED TAXI BIZ The National League had five players batting over .300 on their starting lineup. The lowest batting average on the starting team, excluding the pitcher, was .282. Both teams had equally fine pitching staffs. All the runs scored were on home runs, products of a very few bad pitches. But hitting is where the difference between the two teams was in evidence. 6 Summer Kansan Tuesday, July 18, 1967 The American League, however, was a different story. They had only two .300 hitters, and had four players batting below .282, the N.L.'s lowest starting average. The American League's starting team average was .284 and the National League's .315. That's quite a margin, and proved itself to be the winning margin. Unless the American League gains a lot of talent, or the National League loses a lot. A.L. fans can look forward to more one-run losses and more disappointments. LOUISVILLE, Ky. -(UPI)—Taxicab and Transfer Co., the city's largest cab company, reports its vehicles traveled more than 250,000 miles, made more than 31-,000 trips and transported about 123,000 persons during Kentucky Derby weekend.
